FAIRBANKS — Dispatchers who spoke to a Galena man who claimed to have shot himself early Friday morning thought they might have heard him die while on the phone with them. Instead, according to court documents, they heard 22-year-old Garrett Huntington fake being in the last moments of his life.
Huntington has been charged with two counts of false report, driving under the influence, fourth-degree weapons misconduct and four counts of disorderly conduct for creating hazardous conditions for search and rescue volunteers responding to his false suicide claims in sub-zero weather.
Court documents state Fred Huntington called Alaska State Troopers at 2:40 a.m. Friday and said his son, Garrett, had called him from his cell phone. Garrett Huntington claimed to have shot himself with a .22-caliber rifle and was having trouble breathing.
Fairbanks dispatchers were able to reach Garrett Huntington on his cell phone. He said he was “not alright,” he was 19 miles up the Huslia trail and his snowmachine had broken down. Garrett was hyperventilating, said “it hurt and was hard to breathe” and asked dispatch to tell his parents he loved them.

The next time, and I'm sure there will be one, I'm betting they don't even bother to go looking for him.
You & I both know that the good guys will go looking for the dolt, but he doesn't deserve their concern.
I agree, he doesn't deserve the attention and the tax payers suffer for it.

And while resources are tied up "rescuing" this idiot, someone in real trouble may have been left wanting for care.

Hopefully the young man will get some time behind bars to reflect upon the error of his ways. Or better yet, some meaningful community service--the kind that will break a sweat. Perhaps there are trails that need work?
