Musing

The graduation of my youngest had me thinking back over the last 23 years since becoming a father, and remembering.

When the nurse handed me our firstborn and said goodbye, I was struck by a wave of panic. "What do you mean, goodbye? I'm just supposed to take this little person and leave? Isn't there an owner's manual or something?"

Flash forward six years to the next birth. As we were chatting with the OB nurse, a more practical type, she asked if we'd heard her advice for new parents.

"If the baby turns red, she's hot.  If she turns blue, she's too cold. If she's green, she's sick.  Your job as parents is to keep the baby from changing colors."

Good advice.
