Before Deciding You're Having a Bad Day,

put yourself in these folks' shoes.  KTUU Channel 2 in Anchorage reports:

The Matanuska River has drawn a lot of attention to a home in Butte, as the river continues to eat away land underneath the home.  The home began tipping into the river on Wednesday.

Somehow, as of Thursday evening, the home still hadn't fallen completely in, but when it does, Mat-Su emergency crews say they'll be ready.

This isn't an isolated case. The river has been undermining homes for the last several years. Most owners have been able to get their belongings out, and several have torn down their homes and rebuilt farther away.

But not all are so lucky.

Rivers tend to do that, particularly on bends where the water moves faster on one side than the other.

Just think, years ago people felt investments in real estate a safe bet. What a shame. I feel for the owners.

PH: absolutely. I've seen too many homes or cabins washed away by changes in the course of a river. Flying over the land in question is often quite informative, as you can see where the river has been - and it's NEVER just in one place.

Stephen: it's heartbreaking. Many of these folks get interviewed on local news, and they all say the same things about how far away from the river they were, when they built.

This makes me hurt for them.
