I've been asked for my opinion on a concealed carry piece for a lady who's 5'4", with small hands and short fingers. 9mm is the preferred caliber.
What do you, gentle readers, think of the Ruger LC9? Beretta PX4 Storm Sub-Compact? Any other similar-sized semi-autos we should consider?

Sweet Wife packs the LCP. They're fine as long as you polish the feed ramp. I think the LC9 a fine choice too.

The Beretta PX4 Storm Sub-compact is a great gun. I've never had a problem with it. It's easy to take a part and clean. I also like the Ruger SR9C, I would recommend this one too.

If the LC9 is anything like DW's P3AT, it'll be painful to shoot. It is for me. I can only imagine what 9mm would be like in that small of a gun.
TCA, thanks; that is something to consider. I'm leaning personally toward the Beretta, for what it's worth.
I've no suggestions for 9m but if she can do .40, the Kahr would fit her hand nicely.

Having shot the LC9 myself, I found it to be a fair shooter. But I have good hand strength and was able to manipulate the long, heavy trigger pull and reset. My mother in law was not so fortunate. It proved too difficult for her to shoot well past a few rounds. Having also shot the M&P shield for a few mags, I can comment that the trigger was more manageable for those with weaker grips, as this was the gun both my sister in law and mother in law now pack. They seem to be able manipulate the controls easily and can shoot it fairly well for beginning hand gunners. I haven't shot the Beretta PX4, but have held one, and liked the feel of it. The owner, someone with a variety of handgun experience had good things to say about it.
If she can, try before she buys. I currently have my SR9 loaned out to a friend who is trying it out to see if the caliber is what she is looking for. She'll be using a handgun for a stage, in a tactical rifle match and needs a something that will be easy to shoot and carry. And being 5'2" tall and 110#'s soaking wet, she needs something easy to manage in the recoil department.
Look at the Kahr 9's.

Mrs. Groundhog has found the M&P shield in 9mm to be quite nice. I like it so much I have on on order for myself as well. It's small but not a sub compact. Recoil is such you can fire it all day. Wife is very small of stature, with small hands and low upper body strength. She can perform everything on this gun but lock the slide back. (she hasn't done that on any pistol yet).
Farmer, MaddMedic, and Groundhog - the lady went to the local gun counter while I was collected comments, and announced she likes the grip and feel of the PX4, the M&P, and the Kahr, all in 9mm.

I'm way out of date.. but another vote for the Kahr series. The compact ones feel like smaller and skinner versions of Glocks. I especially liked the metal framed one - I'm afraid I can't recall the model number. Mk9, perhaps?
Kahr PM9 or maybe a baby Glock 26. If it's not controllable and pleasant to shoot, she won't want to practice with it. The Ruger LCP is small, but it's sights are a joke and it's recoil is as sharp as it's trigger pull is gritty. It's a decent back-up carry gun but not for a novice, IMHO. But that Khar shoots nice. And never overlook the venerable Browning Hi-Power or an HK P7 PSP. Pricier, but you get what you pay for.

I would not push for TOO small a grip size, or pistol. It needs to be big enough she can comfortably shoot the weapon well, and practice is not onerous.
May I suggest a S&W M&P 9c? It's a compact double stack 9mm with interchangeable grip inserts so it can be sized to the shooter. I'm only aware on one down tick on the pistol, and I believe S&W redesigned that part.
The 9c is easy to shoot well, and is quite accurate. I carried mine for years, and put many thousands of rounds through it.

ML, the PM9 is the Kahr she tried (I believe). She took pics on her cell phone, but that one was blurred & I couldn't tell which model.
Carteach, the S&W M&P was one of the three she liked, so we'll see.
