Homer man with 32 convictions about to get out of jail again

From today's Anchorage Daily News:

A 48-year-old Homer man with 32 convictions on his record will soon be released from jail again, and that makes people nervous. William Daugherty has served eight months for his most recent assault conviction, which stemmed from an incident in which he was originally accused of kidnapping of an 18-year-old woman. Superior Court Judge Charles Huguelet worried that Daugherty hasn't served enough time for his various crimes but is powerless to keep Daugherty in jail because of sentencing limits, reports the Homer Tribune.

Sounds like there's a law that needs fixing NOW.

Nothing that a group of concerned citizens can't fix with a rope and a tall tree.

In many Alaskan communities, that would be so - and might have already happened. In Homer, they'll be smoking their favorite dope & holding hands...

I agree with Murphy. Someone is going to "cure" this guy of his bad habits. Even in Homer, there's got to be someone he will run afoul of that will take care of business.

joated, you're probably right. It may be a hippy-dippy paradise, but there are still some traditional Alaskans there who won't put up with foolishness for too long.

Yep, short rope, tall tree...

NFO, I concur.

They don't honor 5 strikes (felony charges) and you're out. Put away in prison for life?

I really must have missed something here. We would use this charge when we could on felony offenders. 32 convictions, has me scratching my head.

Sandy, there's a serious flaw in the way the laws were (or were not) applied to this guy.

A young woman in our community was slain by a man that she had begged not be released from prison. She was so certain of her peril, that she'd changed her physical appearance, car and residence. He followed her from her job. My husband and other friends knew her from dealing with her at a car dealership. Dark.

Cathy, that's shameful. Unfortunately, we hear stories like that from time to time, but it shouldn't happen at all.
