Troll for a Halibut & Catch an Orca

From The Blaze:

If you’ve ever gone fishing, you know that moment when you’re about to pull the creature out of the water is one of the most exciting — and even the most frustrating. A group of anglers in Alaska know that all too well now, after video of their halibut trip being interrupted by a killer whale has gone viral.

The video was posted on The Alaska Life Facebook page on Saturday. It shows a man talking with his friends as he halls in one of Alaska’s most popular fish. But as he’s reeling the specimen in, he seems to be talking with his friends about another finned animal swimming in the area. Sure enough, seconds later a killer whale surfaces and snatches the fish right off the hook.

Pretty amazing.

A bunch of guys were talking about it this morning after our 0630 meeting.

LOL that happens no matter where you are fishing.

I was once reeling in a bluegill and had a large mouth bass come out of the water and swallow it whole. Ripped it right off the hook and was gone.

Another time off Key West I was hooking tuna and consistently pulling in half a fish. The last one I got almost completely out of the water when the largest hammerhead shark I ever seen came out and took the back third of the tuna off.

That hammerhead was mottled brown as well. I will remember that color scheme my entire life.

Scared the bejesus outta me.

Reminds me of this girl I once knew, never know what you would catch....

anyhow, nothing bizarre has ever happened to me fishing. I just tug the rod once the bobber goes under. Easy.

drjim, I figured most folks have already seen the video, but the blog devours content ... as you know. :)

Preppy, that would scare most anyone. I know it would scare me!

Now, now, Max: let's not speak ill of the ill. ;)

Brings memories of being in a double kayak off the Skagit flats waiting for the tide to turn. The resident Puget Sound Orca pod stopped by to check us out. Nothing happened; in a few minutes they resumed their trip; much to my profound relief!

Oh . . . I'll be passing this one along :)

WSF, it's always a relief when they move one, no? Your 'encounter' was pretty close!

Cathy, glad you like it!

Wow! I've had that happen with pike and bass, but um, it wasn't quite that impressive. lol

It's okay, threecollie; I'd have been concerned if you had Orcas in that favorite lake of yours. :)
