Holding Up Traffic

I've mentioned before that moose tend to wander into traffic, without any recognition that the shiny, noisy metal boxes can hurt them.

Here's a cow & calf that had better luck:

a reader submission from www.adn.com

Here's another to whet your appetite:

What are YOU looking at?

After seeing the damage (and living through a few) of little deer and car accidents I hate to think what one of those would do.

Ouch!!!

You're right, Preppy. The car is usually a write-off after hitting 1,200 lbs of moose.

Great pics, especially the first!

Those adult moose are just the right size to land on your hood and come through your windshield after your car knocks their legs out from under them.

Glad you liked 'em, threecollie.

ML, that's exactly right - and it happens frequently.

Such a unique animal. They have ears like a deer, a hump like a bull, the body of a mule, and a horse with a long face with no tail or mane. They are probably mean tempered too!

So homely and so cute at the same time.

Chickenmom, moose are members of the deer family, but are docile to the point of stupidity. That's why they walk out in front of oncoming traffic, among other things.

PH, they look really ungainly when walking, until there's deep snow on the ground. Then suddenly those crane-like legs make sense. :)

They're so ugly they're adorable.
Favorite pix is the moose staring through a window . . practically nose-to-nose with a cat.

I like that one, too, Cathy - it's a classic! (May I say, you have good taste in your moose pics ...)
