Things You Won't See at Your Local Fair

The local paper got the photo I was hoping for ... so I'll share it with you. :)
All pumpkins over 900 pounds.

The lumberjack show; not unique to Alaska, but not seen in most fairs farther south.

The blue ribbon winning reindeer at the fair, and the lovely young lady who raised it.
All photos from the Anchorage Daily News.

I almost had a Sunflower as big as the one in the top pic this year.

I remember you mentioned that your big sunflower was knocked down or broken by ... was it the wind?

No I think some borer worm got in the trunk about 6 inches from the bottom it got a brown spot and then began weeping fluids then the wind did indeed finish it off. Yet I had countless others that were not far behind that one and two that were certainly rivals and managed to surpass it before reaching their limit. I would say I got two that reached the 17 foot mark but I had several others that had heads so big the stalks couldn't keep them up as well.

I planted about half an acre of sunflowers just for my bees.

Thank you! I was waiting to see these. We have big pumpkins....we have loggers...but reindeer not so much.

Thanks for the update, Preppy - I only remembered that you had a tall one which fell in the wind, but not the details.

You're welcome, threecollie. I knew there'd be something new. :)

Love the pics! No lumberjacks at our fair, but a chainsaw carver auctions off all his work on the last day. He is really very good and makes a nice deserving profit.

Nice pics, and I think that is a first for me on the Reindeer!

Thanks, Chickenmom.

NFO, that surprises me - thought you'd been everywhere & done everything! :^)

Ha - I didn't know people raised reindeer, but I guess on thinking about it, I shouldn't be surprised by this... just never thought about it.

Looks like great fun!

Teresa, they raise all sorts of northern/high altitude animals up here: Tibetan yaks, llamas, reindeer, and musk oxen.
