A Quiet Morning

It's quiet locally, at least. Yesterday's wind storm generated gusts of up to 84 mph, and at the mid-morning, point, there were some 10,000 customers without power. That included a high school and middle school. Almost all were restored within a couple of hours; this was nothing like last year's storm in September, when lights went out in a quarter of the city, and stayed off for nearly three days.

The difference? In September, the leaves were still green, and many many more trees blew down. Yesterday, over half the leaves had already fallen, and the wind took off 98% of the remainder. Bare branches don't give as much purchase to the winds, and so we fared much better.

Thank you, Lord.

The local paper has photos of the wind damage, here.

There's some good news from the North Slope: one of the local oil companies has found some 950 million barrels of shale oil, according to their preliminary findings. It's easily recovered by fracking, they say, and that's a very good thing for all of us.

The increasingly-rancorous political grandstanding the District of Criminals Columbia is increasingly disgusting, and so I'm going to ignore it here for as long as I can.

I hope y'all have a wonderful day; thanks for stopping by.

Glad you didn't get blown away.

Me, too. It could have been a lot worse; last year's storm was a bit scarier.

Yes, that is so true here too. The Halloween Nor'easter that hit a couple years ago, got us when the leaves were on the trees... no power for 3 days (and we were lucky - many had no power for a couple of weeks). Tall trees + Leaves + windstorm + snow... very very bad. Glad you all had a fairly low key storm this year.

With all the trees we have here, the two things I fear most are the wind and fire. Glad you are O.K.!

Thanks, Teresa. I'm glad, too, that the snow we got a couple of weeks ago wasn't heavy.

Thank you, Chickenmom.

If the distance from DC is directly proportional to the amount of how much you can ignore this mess, then I'm on my way there....

I'll meet you at the airport, Matt. Just let me know what time your flight arrives. :)
