Another Reason NOT To Do Drugs

The Associated Press reports:
Fearful neighbors refuse to help Juneau man injured in shooting

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Juneau man injured in a shooting sought help from his Mendenhall Valley neighbors but was turned away because they suspected he was involved in an illegal drug transaction.

Neighbors early Friday heard gunshots and a wounded man and a companion ran door-to-door, screaming for help. Neighbors called 911 at 12:17 a.m. but refused to open their doors.

... Malyssa Waterhouse, 25, was home with her husband and young child. She said she kept her door locked because she suspected a drug deal or a robbery.

"He was screaming at our door," she said. "We pretended like we weren't home. And the neighbors were like 'Get off our porch' because they've got kids, too. I didn't know if the guy who was shooting was going to come back, I had no idea."

Police have not confirmed drugs were part of the incident.

Suspicions like that don't develop out of thin air; clearly the neighbors know the guy, and those he hangs around with.

Moral: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

No kidding. I would say his neighbors had plenty of experience with the guy and just weren't going there.

Hard choice to make. With small children involved, the right decision. Calling 911 was the right choice.

Preppy, that was my take, too.

WSF, it would be hard, but - given the circumstances - I'd probably have done the same thing they did.

I probably would have went over and finished him off, no more drug dealer in the neighborhood. Lol.

Yep. There are definite patterns of behavior that stick out like a sore thumb to indicate illegal (usually drug-related) activity is going on.

Happened at the apartment building I used to live in. The new tenants down the hall from me looked fishy from the moment they moved in, but not wanting to judge a book by it's cover, I cut them some slack.

Sure enough, within a week they had "friends" stopping by for 15 minutes at 0200 all the time, and I noticed some unusual radio traffic from the local PD on my scanner.

I approached my landlady and asked a few questions, and she advised me to give them wide berth as the building was under observation.

They all got taken down about three weeks later as they were coming in to the building with a large cooler chest full of interesting items.

Hey, if it walks like a duck.....

Senior, it would indeed have been a temptation...

drjim, I hear you. It happens, but it's not always easy to wait on the inevitable outcome.

Agreed, NFO.
