Did you know ..?
For those who don't know:
a) mukluks are Native footwear - think of knee-high, fur-covered moccasins
b) cheechako is a Native word for "greenhorn" or "tenderfoot"
c) A fish wheel is a device for catching fish which operates much as a water-powered mill wheel. A wheel complete with baskets and paddles is attached to a floating dock. The wheel rotates due to the current of the stream it is placed into. The baskets on the wheel capture fish traveling upstream. The fish caught in the baskets fall into a holding tank. When the holding tank is full, the fish are removed.

Does it really have half the world's glaciers? Or it's own and parts of others shared with Canada?
27 species of mosquitos, oh yeah. How many species of "no see'ems"?
Preppy, some are shared with Canada, but half, entirely within Alaska, is correct.
WSF, enough that netting in tents is mandatory. :)
Hmmm I am not buying that half the glaciers claim though. It's pretty much impossible to get any source to give a total world glacier count and the world glacier inventory claims data on 130,000 glaciers. I am assuming many of those are extinct though but the only hard number I could find for Alaska named 694 glaciers and admits many have multiple names. In area covered by ice I Greenland and Canada seem to come out well above Alaska.
Not that I care really that just sounds like a sort of interpretive and slightly misleading claim to me.
That's okay, Preppy. It's only a graphic my daughter found - just remember the number you found is talking about named glaciers. An awful lot of them have no names. But you're entitled to your opinion, and it's just as likely to be right as that graphic.
No worries.
I did know some of them....lol...but only because I love to read novels about Alaska and the wilderness even if I am a big chicken.
threecollie, up here that would a big ptarmigan. Heh.
You had me at cheesecakes!
:-P
