Wolf Kills, Eats Dog After Battle With Owner

From the Anchorage Daily News:

Excerpt:
HAINES -- A Haines woman beat back a wolf with a ski pole but was unable to keep it from killing and devouring one of four dogs she was walking with during a midday ordeal near 40 Mile Haines Highway.
... Working the perimeter, the wolf was able to lunge and pin each of the dogs momentarily, before the other dogs and Bochart chased it off. Four times it pinned 16-year-old Mason, a husky-lab-rottweiler mix that was the largest of the four pets. Still, it was smaller than the wolf Bochart estimated at the shoulder would stand about as tall as her hip.

... After about 20 minutes of skirmishes, the wolf pinned Little Bear, a bearded collie mutt. "Mason exploded and attacked her. That was the first real dogfight. ... The wolf got him by the throat and killed him in an instant. It was done in a second. Without ever looking at us, she began eating his body, with us standing right there," Bochart said.

The story is long and detailed. Read the whole thing at the link.

Guess the wolf was hungry.

Prolly old and starving.

That's what it sounded like to me, Preppy.

That must been horrible for the poor woman, not to mention the dog. Wolf must have been starving. In wolf country one does not walk around without being armed.

Being armed in wolf or bear country used to be a given, up here, but there are a lot of fairly recent immigrants from the Left Coast who think that a few dogs will protect them.

It works on moose and black bears, but not brown, grizz, or wolf. Some folks have to learn the hard way, darn it.

At least it was the dog and not her...

You're right, NFO. A decade or so ago, a young woman was killed by wolves outside a village in western Alaska.

Rev. Paul,

She was lucky the wolves didn't go after her. I think if I lived in your part of the woods, I would be armed when walking with or without my dogs.

Learning the hard way that nature is unforgiving of mistakes. This particular mistake being not being armed in Alaska.

Correct, PH. As my friend Jennifer S says, "Alaska can turn stupid into dead faster than anyplace else."
