Long-time readers and lovers of things Alaskan will remember that Anchorage has a winter celebration every February called the "Fur Rendezvous" or "Rondy" for short, although there's not much fur trapping going on anymore.
It's a mid-winter get-together with games, carnival, exhibits, handicraft and food vendors of all stripes, the World Championship Sled Dog Races, and culminates with the ceremonial start of the Iditarod.
The astute reader will have looked at the dates above, and ascertained that the Rondy began in 1936.

One of these things is not like the other.
I get it, I really do. It looks good to have the Rondy's 80th anniversary during Anchorage's centennial celebration. But do we need to exaggerate to make ourselves look special?
I think ... not.
