They grew much more bold, having lost their minimal fear of humans. The Fish and Wildlife folks planned to shoot them, but impassioned pleas from the public and from Governor Bill Walker put an end to that. So the five bears were relocated to the Kenai Peninsula, well south of Anchorage.
Uh-huh.
Four of the five black bears relocated from the Government Hill neighborhood in Anchorage were shot and killed near a Hope campground after one of the bears climbed into a vehicle on Sunday.
It's a shame, but it's also pretty much the expected outcome. Humans know (mostly) that we have to share Anchorage with the wild animals that were here long before we were ... but the animals are wild and don't always return the consideration.

Had one here yesterday - they are after garbage cans.
We don't use the expensive garbage pick-up service here. We take ours to the "dump" & recycle center.
As much as I love classic cartoons, we must place part of the blame for anthropomorphizing woodland creatures with Disney and Hanna Barbera.
And not following up with children that Yogi doesn't exist!

Guffaw, you're right. I've written a number of times here about tourists who seem to think that the bears will respond like Winnie the Pooh. Strangely, the bears don't seem to have read that memo...
