The movement in the standing of the mushers is somewhat amazing.

During this part of the race, some choose to take their mandatory 8-hour layover, and others wait. So groups of mushers suddenly leapfrog past the leaders, and then - later on - that will reverse again.

Oh, that is interesting. A mandatory stop. That would make things very volatile and unpredictable.

TB, that's right. There are two mandatory stops, of 8 and 24 hours, to rest the dogs & mushers. When & where those take place are up to the mushers, and can play a huge role in who finishes first.
