Iditarod, Day 5

Iditarod Day 5: Petit mushes into the lead in Anvik; Seavey and Ulsom 1 checkpoint behind

By

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Early Friday morning, musher Nicolas Petit pulled into the Anvik checkpoint, taking the lead ahead of rival mushers behind him.
According to the official Iditarod checkpoint times, Petit made it to Anvik just before 5:30 a.m., making the drive from Shageluk after resting for just 10 minutes.
Behind him at the Shageluk checkpoint are Mitch Seavey, multiple-time Iditarod champion, and Norwegian musher Joar Leifseth Ulsom. Seavey is currently in second place, making that checkpoint just before 3 a.m. Ulsom is behind him, making the checkpoint at 4:42 a.m. Friday morning.
As for the other competitors, most seriously contending for the title of champion are somewhere between Shageluk and Iditarod. Some still racing, including several rookies, are a checkpoint behind that near Ophir.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the updates, our son's class is having to keep track of the race and he is having to track Mitch Seavey, and record his times in and out of the checkpoints.

Yea he has that website book marked. On Monday he has to do an argumentative paper on why the race is positive and how well the dogs are actually treated. Of course there are a bunch of the PETA type kids who think the dogs are abused...
