One
evening, when I was yet in my nurse's arms, I wanted to touch the tea urn,
which was boiling merrily … My nurse would have taken me away from the urn, but
my mother said "Let him touch it." So I touched it – and that was my
first lesson in the meaning of liberty.

of Arachne, 1870

Oh yeah. Definitely one I would have stopped, myself. But a good quote and lesson!
It's a great lesson, Linda. Modern society spends too much time trying to protect kids from the world, instead of exposing it to them via life lessons. As a result, kids grow up with no idea whatsoever what life is like.
The real world doesn't come bubble-wrapped, and it's a mistake for us as parents to protect our children from the things which are out there. Rather, we should teach them about it, and how to avoid the pitfalls.
