God's Word for Friday, 9/7/18

Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
Colossians 1:28 KJV

We preach Christ, warning people not to add to the Message. We teach in a spirit of profound common sense so that we can bring each person to maturity. To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less.
Colossians 1:28 MSG

Here, I find the King James version somewhat hard to understand; and am thankful for the Message version.

Though in this sentence here, it warns people not to add to the Message, and that is kind of what the Message does.

Linda, it's important to remember that The Message is a paraphrase. It doesn't change or add to the Scriptures. It says the same things in a different way, i.e., simply rephrasing them in an attempt to make them easier to grasp. The admonition not to add to the Word refers to changing what it says, or adding new "truths" to what was originally written.

Thank you for that clarification, Reverend. That is reassuring.

Sadly, pretty much EVERY interpretation/translation 'adds to the message', when compared to the actual Hebrew texts from the scrolls.

NFO, that is what I think when people tell me I should ONLY read the King James Version.
In order to read the least changed, I would have to learn Hebrew, or perhaps Greek and go to Israel to read the closest translation possible. :)

There's always an inter-linear New Testament, or at least the Greek New Testament used by the Greek Orthodox Church. Direct Greek-to-English translation. The interlinear text is word for word, meaning the English translation is out of order, at least in the order we'd speak them. But they're all there.

I was looking at those, Reverend. Goodness.

I will stick with your KJV verses and the Message Bible. I also have a New American Standard Bible that was given to me years ago by some good friends, that I read occasionally.
And I am still looking to get a New King James Version.
I was just surprised when a friend was really against me reading the Message Bible, a month or so ago. They said the KJV was the only version to read.

Thank you, again! You all have a blessed weekend.
