The Nat'l Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for last night, after a weekend's worth of dire predictions about a mini-snowpocalypse. (Hint: eight inches of snow is widely considered a dusting, here.)
So they warned us all that "heavy snow" would play havoc with this morning's commute.
We got an inch and a half.
The storm slowed down, they say. It'll be here tomorrow, they say. Be ready, they say.

Is your snow fluffy/powdery stuff, or wet?
Powder to feathery fluff, 99% of the time.
In spite of all their technology, I think weather people are still only right 85 percent of the time, or some such.

Linda, I'd guess 50% accuracy in the best of cases.
My theory is that once they get one wrong, they become paranoid about missing the call again and get overly cautious. They would rather be wrong on the "It was not as bad as we thought" rather than "It was much worse than we predicted".
You could well be right.
