As the sun rises on day 3 of the Iditarod sled dog race, 2018's champion, Joar Leifseth Ulsom was the first to reach the next checkpoint, the tiny community of Nikolai.
According to the Iditarod website, Leifseth Ulsom reached Nikolai at 6:36 a.m. on March 5. So far he's the only one to reach the checkpoint.
Still on the trail headed in to Nikolai are Pete Kaiser, Jessie Royer, Aliy Zirkle, and Matt Hall. Close behind them, according to Iditarod GPS data, is Ryan Redington and Nic Petit, who led Day 2.
The next stop after Nikolai will be McGrath.
