God's Good News for Tuesday, 12/17/19

Editor's notes:  when Joseph, Mary's betrothed, realized that she was pregnant - and they were not yet married - he freaked out. Being a young man in that culture, he "resolved to put her away quietly" … much the way earlier American generations would send daughters away to complete their out-of-wedlock pregnancies in a distant town, usually in a sanitarium, before bringing them home.

But, as usual, God's ways are higher than ours, and He had other plans.

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:20-21 KJV

While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God’s angel spoke in the dream: “Joseph, son of David, don’t hesitate to get married. Mary’s pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—‘God saves’—because he will save his people from their sins.” This would bring the prophet’s embryonic sermon to full term: Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).
Matthew 1:20-21 MSG

For which we are eternally grateful.

Joseph is one of the great missing holes of the Bible to me. I have always wondered what his life was like. We literally know almost nothing about him.

Amen, Linda.

TB, it is apparently by design. He, along with Jesus' several half-brothers and -sisters, were not part of the Gospel. Doesn't mean there was anything wrong with them, necessarily; they're just not part of the story.
