Finally, Grown-Ups Are Talking

The Illustrious Tin-Plated Emperor d'Anchorage (i.e., mayor) - all 1,955 square miles of it - asked the City Assembly for an extension of his declaration of emergency. Through November.

Ask not, for nobody knows why. But the public comment period was filled with expletives. Lots of them.

After the Assembly were done laughing, they said the declaration will expire on June 5. And the "hunker down" order expires May 5.

The mayor then "updated" his order, which many residents are now openly ignoring, to add sewing and fabric stores to the list of essential businesses. But only for curbside pickup, don'tcha know.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Alaska is talking about reopening the economy sooner, rather than later.

But in the meantime, the state's economy has suffered egregious damage. Holland America/Princess has docked its fleet, and won't be coming here this year. That's some 2.5 million tourists, and all their money, which won't be in the local economy.

Alaskan economists (I know a few of them) are privately guessing that 15 to 20 percent of our businesses won't reopen. Think on that for a moment.

Yes, we'll recover, along with everyone else. But the temptation for the little bureaucratic dictators with delusions of godhood to "do something" is strong. And it will take an equally strong hand to make them keep theirs off.

People must be hung.
Maybe only figuratively.
But there must be trials.
This must not happen again.

Ed, I agree. Repercussions for such ham-fisted socialistic manipulation of the system should be swift & meaningful.

Those elected officials may want to stay in the cities/towns with armed guards close at hand. Alaskans as a whole are a tad independent minded, and all are armed and proficient with arms.

WSF, I'm not sure it would go that far. But I'm also unsure that I'd leave town, were I in their shoes.

This is what worries me Reverend. The same people that so easily declare things closed have neither the intelligence nor the understanding to help the economy recover when it is "open". They will just stand there, shouting out people to "do things". They are damaging the very people they claim they desire to help.

And yet, those people will undoubtedly vote for them again.

That's why so many people are starting to demand that everything reopen now.
I just hope all goes smooth sooner rather than later.

TB, the problem with a bureaucracy is that almost anybody can say no. It's often difficult to find someone with both the authority and the wisdom to say yes. And elected officials? In general, there's not a nickel's worth of difference between any of 'em.

Linda, I hear you. I'm firmly of the opinion that if the gov't regulators would take their hands off, the economy would come roaring back in record time.
