is the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In short, the Japanese navy's planes tried very hard to take out the American fleet based at Pearl. It was only by the grace of God that Admiral Halsey was moved to take our carriers out on exercises at sea, the day before.
Nearly 3,000 American personnel was killed in the bombing and strafing runs that day, and in the ships which were blown up, capsized, or sunk by the bombing.

It is a somber place to visit, and visiting the Arizona Memorial itself is deeply moving. There are nearly 1,200 sailors entombed in the hull of the Arizona under your feet, and it's sobering in its stark reality.
The Arizona is hard to see because of the sun's glare on the waters, excepting the parts which are above water. The aerial photo in the header, above, gives a better idea of how close she lies to the surface.

I have been there once 30 years ago Reverend. It was a somber visit indeed.
Visited it more than once. Somber and impressive.
