Monday's Discussion

But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

1 Peter 1:15-16

What is "holy"?

ADJECTIVE

  1. dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred.
    "the Holy Bible" ·
    synonyms:
    sacred · consecrated · hallowed · sanctified · venerated · revered · reverenced · divine · religious · blessed · blest · dedicated

Remember, first of all, that the Lord will never, ever command us to do or be anything for which He hasn't already provided the power or authority.

So when He says, "Be ye holy," He's saying it's within our God-given ability to do so.

How? I'm glad you asked. By imitating Him, and doing as He does. Love what He loves. Hate what He hates.

Look to Jesus; He lived His life on Earth, as a human, to show us how it is to be done. In other words, He became like us so we could be like Him.

Reverend, I am working through issue through a different front, Psalm 119, which starts with "Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord". Same concept: the psalmist suggests that we can be blameless (little b, not big B of course). But at least for myself, I almost assume that I will have blame and that a "blameless way" is for other than me. Same with holiness - it must be achievable, or God would not have suggested it (Old and New Testament, in that case).

TB, it's not that a "blameless" life is for someone else. Nothing about our natures is a surprise to the Lord. He knows exactly how fallible we are.

Rather, it's the struggle to lead that blameless life, with all our failures - confessed in prayer as we go - that makes us stronger. And every day, we get a little stronger, and do a little better.

Indeed Reverend - it is appropriating it for myself that is the issue.

I 'try' for morally and spiritually excellent, but I don't always get there, which is MY fault.
