Ugh

Just spent the last five hours doing shopping and lunch in "the big city", meaning Los Anchorage. The traffic is nuts, people are rude, and the stores are jammed.

Pretty much all the reasons why we moved away ... and nothing encountered today makes me want to go back.

A Well-Worn Meme: Which State is Mostly Likely to Survive Zombie Attack

Turns out living in Alaska has its benefits. We have beautiful national parks and uniquely Alaskan food and entertainment. Now you can add zombie survival skills to that list.

"Estately Real Estate Search" ranked which states are the safest and least safe to live in if zombies rise up and take over the world, and Alaska comes in at number one.

The Estately Blog is a resource designed to help you decide which city or state to call home. For the zombie study, Estatley used five criteria, and then averaged the results to create the rankings. The criteria are: fewest people per square mile, gun owners per capita, percentage of people who are cremated instead of buried, percentage of population that is physically active, and interest in the zombie genre.

Here's how Alaska ranks in those five categories.
1. Fewest people per square mile: Alaska is 1st (source: 2014 U.S. Census)
2. Gun owners per capita: Alaska is 2nd (source: DemographicaData.org)
3. Percentage of people who are cremated instead of buried: Alaska is 13th (source: National Funeral Directors Association)
4. Percentage of population that is physically active: Alaska is 7th (source: The State of Obesity)
5. Interest in the zombie genre: Alaska is 7th (source: Google Trends)

According to Estatley, "Alaska is a zombie's worst nightmare and not just because they could be eaten by wolves and bears, but also because there are miles between potential brain snacks, and the majority of people own guns and know how to use them."

Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota round out the top five states most likely to survive a zombie apocalypse. Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, Rhode Island, and New York are the states least likely to survive a zombie apocalypse.

The Zombies

have come upon us, but in slower fashion than suspected.

I've been at work for 2 1/2 hours, and have already counted 12 hunched-over, shuffling zombies in the hallways. A couple of these smartphone-infected denizens have tried to walk into me, until I spoke to them, scaring them momentarily out of their descent into the nethersphere.

Make that 13: another one's standing in the hall outside my office door, having come to a complete stop while thumb-texting.

UPDATE: I stopped counting at 35 ... too easy.

Apparently ...

... it was Zombie / Sloth Day at the stores, here: those who weren't stopped in the middle of the aisle were steering with eyes closed.

Guess we didn't get the memo.

Who's Laughing Now?

S. 3525, the Federal Land Seizure Act of 2012, is Back

We thought we'd defeated this bill, just a month ago. But like any good zombie, it's back again.

From the GOA:

Federal Land Seizure Act
Resuscitating Itself from the Dead

“Looks like GOA defeated Goliath. Nice work.”

GOA warned you earlier this month about S. 3525, the Federal Land Seizure Act of 2012.

As you will remember, Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) -- who is “F” rated by Gun Owners of America -- is pushing this “hunting” bill which authorizes the Obama administration almost unlimited power to seize private lands for “environmental” purposes.

While it purports to the contrary, the bill would allow these seizures without the permission of the landowners for virtually any reason.

You guys delivered a crushing blow to this bill when you pressed your Senators to oppose it.  We won, and it appeared the bill was dead for the year.

As one highly placed office in the Senate told GOA:  “Looks like GOA defeated Goliath. Nice work.”

Sadly, in politics it’s often the case that a dead “Goliath,” like a Zombie, can come back to life -- which is why we need now to cut off its head.  S. 3525 could come up for a vote as early as Today.

Then, in a closely-related story:
In a new poll by Gallup on how do you view Socialism only 36% of Americans viewed Socialism as favorable.

However the real (not) shocker was when you looked at ideology.
53% of Democrats viewed Socialism favorably.. [emphasis added - Ed.]
17% of Republicans viewed Socialism favorably...

Let's review just what it is Democrats favor..

Socialism Defined by: Merriam Webster
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership
and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods

2a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state

Attention, Monster Hunters!

(with apologies to Larry Correia)

These were spotted recently outside of Chicken, Alaska:

It's just wrong. Everybody knows that gnomes and zombies are two different kinds of monsters!

A Very Zombie Holiday Guide

Remember that the holidays will soon be upon us. So here's a friendly safety reminder from Team Unicorn:

31 October 2010

All Hallows Eve

I must have missed a memo, so let me ask ...

... when exactly did the undead start using knives?

Weekend at the Range

My older daughter & I are headed to Wet Bunny Range to see how her new revolver performs. We were fortunate enough to find several boxes of .38 Spl. at the Warehouse last week, and can now plink away. She'll try a few rounds of the +P carry ammo only after getting accustomed to the feel of the "Airweight" pistol with the standard .38 fare.

I'll have my trusty 1911 along, 'cause I'm addicted to putting all those 1/2" holes in paper. It's about time to get out the rifle again, too, but tomorrow is for pistols.

Now that I have my Terrorist tag, I'm on the prowl for them. Oh, and zombies, too. Bring 'em on!

Scientists Say Zombies Could Be Hard to Stop

Ya think?

Click here for the results of a Canadian study ... really. Just remember Canada has very strict gun control, and they only consider decapitation as a permanent "kill."

Personally, I lean toward a high rate of fire, assuming my ammo ever gets here. So I'll keep the axe and hunting knife sharp, too. 'Cause you never know!
