Good morning! It has warmed up to only 5 below, this morning. We hope to see daytime highs going above zero by this weekend, but I won't hold my breath.
UPDATE: As of 1:00 pm, it's -9, with patchy dense freezing fog & light snow. Once again, Accu-Hunch proves that NOAA's forte is chronicling the weather, rather than forecasting it. Their charter doesn't include forecasts at all, but they just can't seem to help themselves. What good little Federal executroids they are!
There's a half-inch of snow, and we had freezing fog overnight, and I can see that it has lingered somewhat. The air has had a peculiar quality, the last few days, as vehicle exhaust has lingered on the ground, rather than rising. It hangs around knee level, and writhes like living thing. Very strange.
The cold has also had a dampening effect on local activities, and a quick perusal of the Daily Noise shows that little is happening locally.
The chairman of the city assembly will be sworn in as acting mayor, as our current Mayor/Senator-elect Mark Begich is heading off to the 111th Congress.
I wish you all a peaceful and stress-free day.

May you and your family have a blessed New Year.
How is the cold effecting the everyday things? In a large City like Anchorage it still has to cause considerable problems.
Not as much as you'd think, because the cold is factored into construction of buildings & utilities installations.
There was one year when it got very cold but didn't snow until February, and a lot of water lines froze. I'm told the frost went almost 13 feet deep because there was no snow to insulate the ground.
Happy New Year to you, too.
That is amazing. I have been watching several programs on the Discovery Channels on life in Alaska over the last year. They were recently dealing with sewage and garbage issues that we in the lower 48 take for granted. Alaska is such a beautiful state, it must leave you in awe of God every day.
Wishing you and the family a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
DR - there are procedures & penalties here that most folks don't have to consider: like not leaving trash set out which would attract bears. The blackies need very little encouragement to get into trash cans, as it is. If the trash collectors see evidence of this, YOU get fined. Some places in town have to use bear-proof receptacles.
Thanks to all of you for your good wishes - I believe 2009 is going to be a better year than 2008, in some unexpected ways.
