... and we'll take care of ours.
While chatting with a Midwest friend last night, I was asked what we do about the darkness in Alaska. I said, "Turn on the lights." He implied that since our nights are so long, there must be something special we do to get by.
Okay. Here's part of how Alaskans deal with long winter nights ...
This photo is from Town Square in downtown Anchorage, with the annual Christmas light display around the ice skating area. (click for big)
We also have our biggest fireworks display, not on July 4th, when it doesn't get dark, but on New Year's Eve. Anchorage also asks residents to string white lights on their homes, businesses, trees, hedges, or whatever, during the darkest months to help offset the gloom. LED lights literally cost pennies to operate, so it's not necessarily a financial burden to leave them on.
Personally, I'd rather see the stars and northern lights. But that's just me.

It would be nice to see the aurora... but I have to admit, all that glitter and glow downtown does really help. I love the office building down near midtown that has a two story rainbow/aurora on it. Talk about your public service. :)
That's very pretty. I have no problem with darkness... for that matter it might make my life easier since I tend to have a real problem with early mornings. LOL.
