Now THIS is Interesting

From an AP story in the Daily News:

JUNEAU -- Gov. Sean Parnell took aim at the federal government in his first State of the State address Wednesday night, saying federal actions -- on endangered species protections, issues of land access, health care -- "often seem at war with Alaskan interests."

~ snip ~

"We best realize statehood's promise and grow our economy when we determine our destiny, not Washington," he said in his address delivered to a joint session of the Legislature.

He called federal efforts, like those to expand protections for polar bears, "overreactive" and "job killers," comments that drew applause from the audience. He called proposed federal health care legislation bad policy that would force Alaskans to buy health insurance and diminish individual freedoms.

Read the rest here.

We all remember that one of Governor Palin's final actions was to sign Alaska's State Sovereignty Act. While things like that tend to be largely symbolic, it was representative of the way many feel.

It may all be election-year grandstanding, but it will be very interesting to see how far the new Governor is willing to go in this direction.

Oh my, that would be interesting.

Gov. Parnell has always struck me as a man who wouldn't push outright non-compliance for scriptural reasons* if nothing else, but within those limits... interesting.

And I still owe you an essay. *heh* Guess I better get busy. :)

* where is that, anyhow? I remember reading it once upon a time - talking about how rebellion against earthly masters generally leads to a bad end, but don't worry about that 'cause you're not hear for the temporal so forth and so on..... but can't recall where.
I'm fairly sure it's in Acts, but I think there's an older reference as well I can't recall.... I just remember thinking it was interesting coming from a country that is a beacon to the world *because* of rebellion against an earthly king (and Jefferson's "resistance to tyrants..." quote of course)

Hmmm... the Feds at war with AK? Can you guys share your governor with us down here in WA? Maybe just for a good rebel rousing speech such as that? Our little hellcat is nothing but "thank you fed, may I have another?"

Rev Paul,

It is not just Alaska that the fed seems to be at war with, and while the polar bears are only the most eggregious, the entire Endangered Species Act is highly questionable.

Can NC borrow you Governor, after of course Washington gets through with him? We're happy to wait our turn.
