The Beginning of the End (Updated)

Friday morning in regard to the work week, that is.

The overpaid prognosticators at Accu-Oops have rung the "oops" gong again, after teasing us today with thoughts of 50+ degree temps over the weekend. Now they say it will only be 43 today. The fiends!

I griped (and posted) a bit about the rising gas prices last night, as I filled the cavernous fuel tank on my Expedition (it was only half-empty - about as low as I usually let it get). 16.79 gallons rang up to $67.65, at $4.129 per. This is going to severely hurt the lower-income folks, of whom there are many ... despite the protestations of whichever political party is currently blowing up our fiscal policy. And make no mistake: neither party has the slightest intention of doing anything at all about the pending financial collapse. There are good folks in D.C., to be sure, but not nearly enough of them to matter.

Just the same, spendy gasoline won't stop us from doing what needs to be done; God has blessed us beyond our expectations since we moved up here.

Saturday afternoon we'll hit the road to the south, on the way to the town of Girdwood, about 40 minutes from here. It's the home of the Alyeska Ski Resort and some spectacular scenery - but then, all that mountainous scenery along the Turnagain Arm is spectacular. It's also the summertime home of the Girdwood Forest Fair, a hippie-dippy event where folk art meets a modern renaissance fair meets live music meets an upscale flea market, all set amid blowing clouds of pot smoke thick enough to make you high while walking from the parking area.

Okay, I'm kidding. A little.

But this weekend, the main event (for us) will be dinner with co-workers at the Seven Glaciers Restaurant, atop the snow-covered mountains of the Alyeska Resort. In fact, you must take the tram to the top of the mountain to reach the restaurant. I'll take pictures, I promise.

And now, I'm off to another fun-filled day of printing, mailing and/or distributing rent invoices.

UPDATE: Larry Correia (bless his monster-huntin' heart) has a truly EPIC rant about the U.S. taxes, national debt, budget deficit, and general lack of anything resembling brainpower coming out of D.C.

Anyhow ... Up the Republic, or something like that. Well, you know. Ta!

Re: gas price: I've got a family member who does VERY well (I think his salary is ~$150k/yr). He's mostly right of center, but drinks the MSM koolaid and thinks that we need "reasonable" gas taxes...like maybe "just" $2-3/gallon. I've tried to point out that the average family of 4 makes about $40k, and that 10 gallons per week at $3/gallon is $1,500/year, which is perhaps 10-20% of said family's disposable income.

He's a bit discomforted by this calculation and seeks to find some flaw in the calculation, because it pretty much torpedoes his desired outcome.

Smart enough guy, but - like many - he's unable to honestly confront the inevitable outcome of his ideas.

You know... I recently read in a book that when secession was finally declared in the SC, a great number of people felt relief.

The explanation given was that after literally decades of back and forth, the other shoe had finally dropped. As horrific and nasty as it would be - and I daresay not everyone went for Dulce et Decorum even that early - at least the waiting was over and they could get on with soldiering through the suckitude.

... I'm starting to see what that must have been like. It's those horrible moments when you see the car sliding on the ice, and everyone watching can just see it's going to impact and no one can do anything about it, and the air is still with that looming feeling.

Whuf. On to work, while there's work to be done.
