A Bit o' This...

and a bit o' that, today.

The morning's forecast from the airport (there's an inherent fallacy there, but I won't expound on that) was 34 degrees and snowing. As we looked out at the sunny skies, we wondered exactly which airport they linked to.

Turns out there was a postage stamp-sized patch of snow over Stevens International, which didn't extend to any other part of town. So the other 99 percent of Anchorage was dry and mostly cloudy, with partly sunny areas (like ours).

The snow has been melting rapidly, the last few days, and most of the roads are dry and ice/snow-free. That's a good thing, although I did need 4WD to get around in the parking lot at The Dome this morning.  The road around the perimeter of the lot was 60 percent muddy gravel, 20 percent mud, and 20 percent under water.

My wife & I went through a metric boatload of clothes, yesterday, and separated all the clothes which no longer fit (due to our weight loss) from those which still do, and those which fit once again.

It seems we're making progress: fully 50% of the pile is now in bags, for an upcoming clothing drive.

Younger daughter Samantha will be graduating from high school next spring, at the age of 16. We've found that she can enroll in the culinary program at UAA even though she's under age; it seems they grant waivers. Older daughter Melanie will be attending her I.T. course at the same time, so they can room together. From a father's standpoint, that's a VERY good thing, as the schools are in Seward, 120 miles away.

A number of folks, both in comments here and in a couple of other sites which have linked to my mini-sermon about "What It Costs" have asked that I preach more often.

Okay. Just remember, you asked for it. :)

120 miles? poof! That's a snap.
My eldest went from northern New Jersey to UMass some 200+ miles. My youngest went first to Parris Island and Marine Corps boot camp; thence to UI in Moscow, Idaho; Camp Pendleton, California; Iraq; back to Moscow, ID; next to Eugene, Oregon; and now Portland, Oregon. Weekend visits were/are, to say the least, unthinkable.

Then again, a friends' son is going to Cornell just about 100 miles away. They seem to suffer(?) more from empty nest syndrome than we did. I say "suffer" but they also seem to be visiting more of the Finger Lakes wineries now that Nick is away. ;-)

Joated, it's not the distance that's bothering me ... it's her moving out at 16 that gets to me, a bit.
