Ch-Ch-Changes

In one of Alaska's harbingers of spring, our vehicles are being re-shod today, going from studded snow tires to street tread. Quieter, smoother, with better mileage, it's one of those things we anticipate with great eagerness as the days grow warmer and longer.

Speaking of longer, it was light at 5:25 this morning (okay, dusky, but enough light to walk outside), and will still be light at 10 pm. We're gaining almost six minutes per day, this time of year, and that makes a noticeable difference.

The weather guy guesses we'll reach the mid-40s again today, and might hit 50 tomorrow. In fact, he's going WAY out on a limb and guessing we could be in the 50s all weekend. Despite his pitiful record, we're hoping he's right this time. After seven months of winter, opening the windows is a delight.

We've been discussing what to do/where to go this summer; after reviewing the various options, it seems we've done almost everything there is to do - at least regarding day- or weekend trips out of Anchorage. A few remain: take the railroad to Seward, go on a whale-watching cruise, or fly to towns/villages inaccessible by road. You know, all the spendy things.

Oh well, nothing good comes cheap. Isn't that what they say?

Yep!

Considering how much Terry and I dropped on our trip last summer--to go on whale watching cruises, travel the length of the Alaskan Highway (almost said ALCAN),go up the Dalton to Coldfoot, go halibut fishing in Homer, etc. (they cancelled our flight to a village--said it was cause of the weather, but Terry and I were the only passengers). We did have a great time, though And met lots of strange and wonderful people along the way. (You figure out which category you fit into, Paul.)

Might take awhile to save up to pay the gas bill on the next trip. Certainly will take a new energy policy. Probably a new president, too.
