Last Friday, the Alaska State Troopers shot & killed their sixth person for 2012, nearly one per month. This one was the subject of a highway chase, who then apparently drove off the road & subsequently charged troopers while waving a baseball bat. According to published reports, they "shot to stop him" and he died. I'm not even going to get into that, this morning. Not enough time to discuss the inherent fallacy of attempting to "shoot to stop" an alleged assailant.
The most recent shooting of a citizen by Anchorage police has been ruled "justified", a judgment which will surprise no one on either side of the case. The victim's son says the police are lying. It was reported at the time that the man was brandishing a BB pistol which, in pictures published in the local news, was indistinguishable from any of the 'plastic fantastic' pistols so popular today. It didn't even appear to have an orange muzzle. I don't have all the facts, so won't offer an opinion.
It's just that between the Anchorage PD and Alaska State Troopers, an awful lot of folks are dying, this past year.

Yesterday morning's quake here was originally measured a 4.9. That number has been revised to 5.2, which doesn't surprise me. Anything a hundred miles away that produces that much lateral motion had to be reasonably strong.

There are more fun & games going on in Unalaska, according to their famous (infamous?) police blotter. You can read the latest round of follies here. Here's one short excerpt:
"Officers mediated a dispute between two people who no longer seem to enjoy being married to one another."
I love that stuff.

A personal note: I'm happy to report that my ongoing attempts to lose weight proceeds, albeit slowly. I've lost a full size in both shirt & waist.
However, that progress is sad on one front: two years ago, I purchased an Eddie Bauer Expedition parka, the most expensive one they sell. It is exceedingly warm, so much so that I've only worn it a few times, when the temp is well below zero.
Accordingly, I'm forced to give away the very nice parka, and am checking with a couple of guys here might be able to wear it. It's a 2X, and - fortunately - I'm not, any more.

Congrats on the weight loss! And yeah, times get hard, people do stupid things... Rockin and rolling is NOT the way to wake up when you're not a sea! Just sayin...
Congratulations on the weight loss. I've been spending the last couple of months getting back into shape myself. I figure if I don't the children will eventually overrun me;-)
Very much congrats, and real weight loss with your diabetes and staying healthy at the same time is am honest claim to fame.
If I were up there I'd make an offer on the coat as I am a 2x at the moment.
I've got something similar down here that I have outgrown. I used it while shoveling the driveway and soaked myself. The temp was in the 20's and not cold enough to wear.
Thanks, gentlemen. I'd trade the coat for a three or four boxes of ammo, if anyone's in the immediate vicinity. :)
Congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome!
Especially with a daughter who specializes in awesome foods.
While some of the whale fat follies, um, Unalaska Police Blotter, take a knowledge of Alaska for granted, I found that reading them to a former cop produced tears of laughter, and even the Calmer Half and the housemate were chuckling a bit.
Congrats on weight loss!
Our Deacon lost weight when his wife poked him in the waist, smiled, and said "My chubby hubby."
