Thursday Morning Updates

Good morning, my friends. I hope you're off to a good start today.

Helping Where We Can Dept:  There were a couple of rescuers from U.S. Fish & Wildlife on the roof this morning, corralling the trapped goslings into large boxes.
Requisite low-res cellphone pic of geese being coaxed into transport boxes. One parent can just be made out on the wall to the right of the orange shirt. (Better orange than red!)

Only three of the goslings are present, meaning predators got two of them overnight. It was probably ravens, but might have been an eagle.

At least in a better location, the survivors will have a fighting chance.

UPDATE: The box o' goslings was moved to the small stream behind the building, and opened. Mom & Dad Goose heard them & flew down to join them.

At last sight, they were all happily swimming upstream into the tree-lined park to the south.

Later, the janitor & I will go remove the piles of leaves etc on which the nest was built.

That's More Like It Dept: It's a lovely 54 degrees this morning, heading up to 70 later. That's still several degrees warmer than our average high of 63, this time of year, but just about perfect for us light-starved Alaskans. I mean, it was snowing a month ago, so we've loving this.

Heat Makes People Stupid, Part 1 Dept:

Anchorage police explosives technicians removed a suspected pipe bomb from a Fairview parking lot Wednesday morning.

Federal agents later learned it contained no explosive material, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

... "At this point, we don't know what the intent was," [ATF Agent Jay] Crump said. "But it did resemble what IEDs sometimes look like."

Heat Makes People Stupid, Part 2 Dept: Kids and an alligator. What could go wrong?

 'Nuff said.

That's enough for now. Thanks for stopping by, friends.

I don't know what they are like up there, but in many places in the Lower 48 Canada geese are a major nuisance. So the lover of living creatures has read this with the knowledge that it would have been best if none had survived but knowing I'd have been furious if Fish and Wildlife hadn't responded and moved them.

PH, I had an ulterior motive: since the geese are known to use the same nests year after year, I wanted them relocated so I could destroy the pile of dead leaves that they nesting on. Besides, the goslings deserve a chance to swim at least once before the ravens eat them. :)
