Rough Night

I got only interrupted sleep last night, and the spark of creativity burns low. Got nuthin'.

There's only this, about another bear encounter:

Wildlife officials are recommending people stay away from the Rover's Run trail in Far North Bicentennial Park after a brown bear charged a cyclist Tuesday.

This sign alerting people of high bear activity sits just before Rover's Run at Far North Bicentennial Park in Anchorage.

The 3,700-foot trail comes close to Campbell Creek's south fork and is notorious for human-bear encounters this time of year, when salmon are present. Park advocates and the city plan to move it away from the creek next summer. Until then, a multitude of signs warn of the bruins lurking in the vegetation along Rover's Run.

Four women biking the trail had a close encounter Tuesday morning, said Dave Battle, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Fish and Game. The first two passed by a bear in some bushes but did not see it, Battle said. The third woman spotted it, and it charged the fourth, he said.

"It was probably typical defensive behavior," Battle said. "Sometime brown bear behavior is to run away and sometimes it's to run at the person."

I would prolly lay down so much suppressive fire ammo prices would go up again :)

And I wouldn't be going in there unarmed.

"Suppressive fire" and "be sure what lies beyond your target" might be in conflict there, but I understand your humor. :)

And nobody should enter the woods here unarmed. But the city folk do it all the time.

I hate it when sleep refuses to acknowledge need. There's just never a sandman around when you really need one.

Agreed, Six. Sometimes, it just ain't happenin'.

Rev. Paul,

I have to agree with Six!
Have you tried reading in bed with some nature type music or easy listening music? This seems to relax my husband, before you know it he's out cold.

"High Bear Activity"

Can't imagine living cheek by jowl with large carnivores.
I get nervous if I know there's a skunk in the neighborhood.

Sandy, thank you for caring. I frequently read before bed, but it wasn't insomnia that interrupted my sleep. It was work-related.

Cathy, the URL for my blog ("mooseintheyard dot com") isn't a metaphor. We frequently have both moose and bears in the yard & the neighborhood around us ... but not at the same time! :^D Nevertheless, I understand your trepidation: a 600 lb predator can turn anyone into a praying man (or woman).

Amen :)
