Common knowledge - everyone should carry a "sweat towel". Have carried one pretty much non-stop since '68. To say it's handy would be an understatement. Not carried it across a galaxy yet . . . but who knows . . .
Bill, the use of the towel in the book is multipurpose, and rarely for the reasons we'd think of as common sense - but you're right. It never hurts to have one handy. :)

Linus Van Pelt would concur! A towel--or small blanket--can be very useful.
That's true, although in completely different universes. But each author had the right idea.
And rope. You never know when you'll need a bit of rope.

It's worth a re-read every so often, isn't it? Douglas Adams was brilliant.
