So We Came Back to This

Statement as of 6:34 AM AKST on November 21, 2013

... Winter Weather Advisory for snow and freezing rain remains in effect from midnight tonight to midnight akst Friday night...

* snow... 2 to 6 inches.

* Ice accumulation... a trace up to one tenth of an inch.

* Timing... precipitation will begin as all snow late this afternoon and continue through late tonight. Warm air aloft will overspread cold air at the surface and lead to a transition to freezing rain beginning early Friday morning. Areas of freezing rain will persist through Friday afternoon before more cold air arrives and allows precipitation to change back to all snow Friday evening. Snow may be heavy at times Friday evening before tapering off to showers Friday night. Southeasterly winds of 30 to 40 mph will lead to localized areas of blowing snow along Turnagain Arm. [The route southeast out of Anchorage, to the Kenai Peninsula - Ed.]

* Impacts... travel may be difficult.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.

Well a least the snow doesn't get in everything and stay there for ever :)

Nope; only until May. Or April, if we're lucky.

I'm sure that above when it mentions "warm air aloft" it means that in relative terms.....Heh it is Alaska after all.

You're right, Matt; it just means "warmer than it is at the surface" ... it's a relative thing. :)

Indeed. And we don't get freezing rain very often, but this will be twice in two weeks. This winter doesn't like us very much, it seems.

Cathy, we get some good folks stopping by - thank you for being one of those. I'm a blessed man.

I'm glad you aren't flying into that weather, but do be careful driving or maybe just ice skate to work. ;)

Fortunately, it's supposed to snow first, so we'll just wind up with crunchy snow. Snowshoes, rather than skates. Or maybe skis. Hmm.
