This guy thinks so. He presents a thoughtful study based on three types of law. Go there if you wish, and think it over for yourself.
Here's an excerpt:
"The
international law of secession is in the process of emerging at this
very time. The U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights indicates that
all people have the right to a country. A corollary of this is that no
people should long be kept in nationless status, e.g., the Palestinians.
A further corollary of this is that no people should long be kept in
any subjugated status, such as by being citizens or subjects of a
country from which they are alienated."

"The
argument for secession under emerging international law might be
strongest for Alaska. Geographically, the place is disjoint from the
other states of the Union, making it an identifiable place. Furthermore,
under their state constitution's explicit right of privacy, possession
of small amounts of marijuana is a right; yet, the so-called federal
government imposes the costs of its war on drugs onto the citizens of
Alaska.
"Furthermore, the
people of Alaska have been long frustrated in developing their natural
resources because of the opposition by majorities in the "lower 48."
Indeed, as a separate nation, Alaska might be the freest place in the
world, with zero taxes because of its wealth in natural resources,
well-established civil liberties, and a socially tolerant,
live-and-let-live attitude among its people."
I don't know if this is inevitable, or desirable, and you must draw your own conclusions.

Secession will happen one way or another within the US. There is no way the government can continue to bring in immigrants who have no intention of becoming 'Americans" and keep the US together. Eventually either the new immigrants will leave on their own or the sheer costs will force the flyover states to leave just to survive.
I wouldn't look to the UN for any sort of confirmation for any state that contains Whites, especially White Men to have any right to secession though. As with most UN "rights" they do not apply to White, Christian Men.
Agreed, Preppy. It seems Balkanization is more likely than not. The only question is how hard the government would fight to hang onto those who leave.
" . . how hard the government would fight to hang onto those who leave."
Ah. There's the rub.
Tell you what . . It would be really, really ugly.
Pray it doesn't come to this.
Cathy - I have a feeling that "really, really ugly" is an understatement.
Legal arguments pale against economic reality and physical security.
Quite right, WSF. Economic reality & self-interest will drive whatever decisions are made.
+1 on WSF, and we're damn near to that point... sigh
If you guys decide to fight the fight over it, I'm in with two dogs and a machine gun.
Concur, NFO. Completely.
ML, you may not be able to wait on others to begin, given your location.
Actually I've always kinda figured that it would start around here and I've planned accordingly. But if by some chance, you guys up there decide to jump-start things, a little heads-up would be nice.
I'm just along for the ride, like everyone else. "Observant spectator" would be a good way to describe it...
Rev,
I've always thought Texska or Alaxas might be good names for the new country.
I appreciate the humor, Juvat. :)
That is an interesting post you dug up, Rev. Paul.
My personal opinion is that there would be huge advantages to secession simply because of greater local control. A country with 300 million people will be run by those who can game the system the best. They can pit gun rights against abortion rights, so that we never even get to discuss other issues. In a country of a few million it is much harder to pull this kind of trick off: the country and issues would be local enough that everybody knows the score and who the crooks are.
But bringing this about is a very long term effort. There are so few who have even thought about it seriously that legal considerations don't even matter yet. And those few who benefit from the current system are smart and determined and own the megaphone.
