Remembering the '64 'Quake
The 9.2-magnitude earthquake that reshaped parts of southcentral Alaska left scars on those who survived ... and on Alaska itself.

I remember the '64 quake quite well.
Years later, I met a guy who had been working up there at a NASA tracking station. He and one of his buddies had a day off, and were out riding dirt bikes. They stopped for a break, and his friend stated yelling to "LOOK AT THAT!", and he said they watched a wave come moving through the land at high speed, and just instinctively hit the dirt.
He said he'd never forget it as long as he lived.
Those were reported by a number of the survivors, Jim - most now can't quite believe it.
Wow, just, wow. I pray that never happens here in new england. Although teh 'tists are saying that we're loooong overdue. God help us.

Yep, large earthquakes are not fun to be in.
The biggest one that I've been in was the Northridge earthquake that happened when I was living in San Pedro.
San Pedro is right on the coast, and is a soil liquefaction area. The whole city just wobbled like a big bowl of Jell-o, but only had minor damage.
The poor people in Northridge didn't fare so well.....
