Friday ... At Last

It's been a busy week here in Lake Woebegone Anchorage. You've probably noticed I haven't written much, choosing instead to post news stories and the occasional funny picture.

Sorry 'bout that, but stuff happens.

There's plenty of purely local news, but not much that would interest anyone Outside. Police found the body of a woman missing for a month ... there've been 24 shootings in the northern third of Anchorage this year, but very few farther south ... this political group isn't fond of that one ... and so on.

Like I said, nothing that would fascinate a reader in Des Moines, or wherever.

I've been busy, and there's lots of activity at work. Routine things, really, but a lot happening at once.

* * * * *

But since it's Friday, here are a few funny/strange/weird laws from around Alaska:

  • While it is legal to shoot bears, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited. (state law)
  • Persons may not live in a trailer as it is being hauled across the city. (Anchorage)
  • It is considered an offense to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose. (Fairbanks)
  • Employers of bars may not let their bartenders serve while they are drunk themselves. (Haines)
  • Owners of flamingos may not let their pet into barber shops. (Juneau)
  • For all you would-be pranksters out there, it is illegal to string a wire across any road. (Anchorage)
Note: when you consider that most laws are written to address a problem after it already arose, those get even funnier.

Once spent two weeks in Haines on a construction project, can see the merit in this law.

WSF - agreed.

Aw, come on. I have to leave the flamingo at home? Life's just not fair.

Not at all, Vicky - you just have to tie it up outside. :)

So on the employer and bars thing... is it when the employer is drunk or bartender? Just wondering. LOL.

I've been running like crazy myself because I was gone all last weekend. Amazing how messed up things get when one takes just a couple days off.

Teresa, the answer to your question is "yes". :)

In regard to the second point, the answer would be either to never take time off, or - more to the point - NEVER GO BACK. Now, if only that were an option...

I'd like to know the story behind the flamingo...

PH, so would I. Given the um, colorful history of southeast Alaska during the Gold Rush years, I'm sure it's a good one. :)

I do feel bad for Vicki.
She's right. That's just not fair!

Cathy, it's not easy being pink?

Anyone who is foolish enough to wake a sleeping bear....

You're right, Chickenmom. My guess is that the penalty for so doing can only be applied to survivors. :)

Note that feeding an alcoholic beverage to a moose is only illegal in Fairbanks.

Not Los Anchorage.

I admit nothing about a strawberry daiquiri and Buzzwinkle, may he rest in peace...
