Whatever Plans We Had for the Day

have been set aside.

The average July rainfall in Anchorage totals 2.02". We received more than that between late evening and midnight, and it's still coming down at a good clip. The weather service has issued a flood advisory for small streams and low-lying areas in Anchorage.

It's been many years since we've seen this much rain here. Up in the mountains, and along the Gulf of Alaska coast? Sure, happens all the time. But since the lows circulate counter-clockwise, and we're nestled against the western feet of the Chugach Mountains, there's a "rain shadow" effect where it rains all around us ... but not so much locally.

Except this time. It did make good sleeping, though.

Rob, we're just happy it's pouring rain on the wildfires across the central interior. 5 million acres have burned already.

I was going to ask about the fires, but you answered that... Good news!

Rev. Paul,

This rain should help with all the fires in the area.
You and your family be safe with the surrounding flooding.

Rev. Paul said...

Yes it is, NFO. Thanks.

Sandy, the flooding was very localized, and didn't present any danger to us at all. But thank you for your concern. :)

As long as the mudslides don't start :)

Little danger of that here, Ed. The areas affected were creek bottoms and intersections with no rain gutters. We have a LOT of those. Oh - and one apartment complex which apparently couldn't drain the rainfall fast enough.

I hope it doesn't cause any localized flooding. Stay warm, safe, and dry.

Brigid, one apartment complex did have flooding. It's one of those places where the first floor is about three feet below grade; Anchorage's storm drains are inadequate for anything heavier than a light drizzle. That's where there are any, of course.

Stephen, it was indeed.

threecollie, thank you. :)

Guffaw, it made for a very restful night.
