45 Years Ago, This Day

... I reported to Great Lakes Recruit Training Command for boot camp.

Since the question always arises, I'm 5th from the left, back row.

Me (the tall one) during a company inspection, in boot camp.

It doesn't seem possible to have been so long ago, but that's life. Fun flies when you're doing time ... oh. Wait.

And for anyone who hasn't already seen it, I wrote the story here.

:)

I was in the Department of the Navy, too. The men's Department! Hahahahaha! I kid. Because without inter-service rivalry, we'd have peace!

Drove past Great Mistakes many, many times when I lived in the Chicago area.

I seem to recall my Dad spending some time there, but I'm not sure if that's where he did boot, as he was SeaBees.

I know he "did some time" at Port Hueneme.

Steve, without the inter-service rivalry, it would have been less fun. :)

Jim, he probably attended either boot camp or a training school. SeaBees start out as recruits, too. Port Hueneme is kind of the "home base" for SeaBees, after they finish their initial training.

I did spend a lot of time amongst the riffraff. I was on the Fort Fisher (LSD 40) for a few weeks, and did a WestPac on the Peleliu (LHA 5).
