Nic Petit arriving at the village of Iditarod |
The musher checked in to the Anvik checkpoint at 4:23 a.m. early Friday, after maintaining a lead for much of the past day.
Petit's competition, including the musher that bested him last year after a contentious race, eventually taking first place in the race, Joar Leifseth Ulsom, remained resting in Shageluk.
According to the Iditarod standings, Leifseth Ulsom checked in at just after midnight at 12:14 a.m. Behind him was Jessie Royer, Pete Kaiser, Mitch Seavey, and Richie Diehl, who all checked in after 4 a.m. Friday.
Those five are the only racers in Shageluk, but multiple racers are en route, having left the previous checkpoint of Iditarod yesterday.
