It was 24° this morning, and there was frost on things which sat out all night. Fortunately, that doesn't include me.
Speaking of last night, I was awakened shortly after 0300 by the beeping from a carbon monoxide detector at the end of the hall. Unexplained life mystery #2,147: why do smoke &/or CO detector batteries always die in the middle of the flippin' night?
But there's no precipitation in the local forecast until the 16th, which means it's irrelevant. That will change dozens of times before the middle of the month gets here. But "rain" and "low of 32" don't exactly thrill us.
Start talking about the white stuff, Mr. Weatherman. We Alaskans are dreadfully tired of wet, icy winters, and would love a return to heavy snow.
And yes, I know I should be careful what I ask for. :)

Intarweb Tubez, or the Lack Thereof
The 'net was off-line when I got to work this morning at 0700, so I contacted the I.T. guy.
It seems that my company was paying for two cable internet connections: one shared by me and another fellow, and a second for my boss's staff on a different floor.
As a cost-cutting measure, we discontinued the first, and increased the speed of the second, to handle everyone's connections. It was a significant upgrade, too ... from 15 mbps to 50.
The upgrade connection took place overnight. So why was my line down?
Different modems, you see. The one I'm plugged into no longer had a signal, and it didn't occur to anyone to move the connection from this modem to that one.
Hmph.
Ah well, all's good now. My connection is already faster than before, and by tomorrow - after the modem adjusts to to the newly-spread load - it should be a LOT faster.
It reminded me of what things were like before the 'net was available. Not bad, just ... slower. But I admit to thinking of something to look up on-line about every four minutes, on average. The 'net has spoiled us all.

Saturday Harrumph
I was called at 6:48-in-the-blessed-a.m. yesterday by a woman who demanded to speak with my predecessor (who's been gone for 4 1/2 years, by the way). I explained that said person doesn't work for my company any more, and the woman then impatiently huffed and asked for the name of Dr. So-and-So's secretary.
Trying not to lose my cool at that early hour, I told her that I'm a commercial property manager, and don't keep track of my tenants' staffers. Besides, there are nearly 30 clinics in the building. I told her she should directly contact the doctor in question.
I thought that settled the matter. But while checking the e-mail inbox for any messages from my boss, I saw the woman's name. She was asking for the same info, except this time in writing. Turns out she's an admin assistant herself, and apparently doesn't get the concept of checking area codes for any time difference. Nor is she familiar with being told to look up a phone number.
No, she just went back to her notes, which we already know are wrong, and fired off a quick e-mail in lieu of doing, you know, any actual work.
So I looked up her area code ... and whaddaya know. 847 is Chicago, which explains a lot. She'll be a Dimocrat who is unaware there's anyplace else besides where she is.
They don't call them Dims for nothing. :^)
