Greenbacks and Ham

Greenbacks and Ham
(With apologies to Theodore Seuss Geisel)
Robert A. Hall
I am, I am, your Congress Man
Your Congress Critter, yes I am!
How would you like Greenbacks and Ham?
Please vote for me, I’ll give you them!
I do not like you, Congress Man,
I do not like Greenbacks and Ham,
They might taste fine, right now, today,
But someone, someday has to pay!
Greenbacks and Ham, they all are free,
I’ll give you them, just vote for me!
And you will never have to pay,
I’ll print more bucks, put off that day,
I’ll borrow here, I’ll borrow there,
Greenbacks and Ham spread everywhere!
I will not eat your Bucks and Pork,
Not with a spoon, not with a fork,
I know that someone has to pay!
My grandkids all will rue the day,
We sold their future for your Ham,
For someone has to give a damn!
You think that you are such a smarty?
I’ll bring them to your next Tea Party,
Will print more cash, we’ll tax and spend,
That’s how we’ll get your vote, my friend.
Nancy, Harry and I will jam,
Right down your throat, Greenbacks and Ham!
I would not like them there or here,
I would not like them any year,
Don’t try to jam them down my throat,
You’ve bought your last dishonest vote!
You’ve hocked our future, sold our land,
It’s time that someone made a stand,
I am that someone, yes I am,
No more, no more, Greenbacks and Ham!
I don’t know why you feel this way,
For spending always wins the day,
It’s Pork that makes the votes come in,
That’s why I’m fat and you are thin,
Barack knows this, it’s all a sham,
He won’t veto Greenbacks and Ham!
I do not like you, Congress Man,
I do not like your spending plan,
I know that it may be too late,
That you have sealed our country’s fate,
But I am free, I am, I am!
I say NO MORE Greenbacks and Ham

A Bit o' This ... And Some o' That

4 p.m., out my kitchen window. 14 degrees, winds of 20 mph, gusting to 28. Could be worse, though; it could be snowing, and the temp is still above zero.  Check back in a month.

Layers-of-editorial-oversight Dept: an exercise in multiple grammatical errors.
A sixth-grader told police today that an SUV ran over her foot after the driver first trying to abduct her while she walked to school the darkness this morning, Anchorage police said.
The story is of something bad, which could have been much worse, and I'm glad the girl is safe. But does anyone even bother to read these snippets before they appear on-line?

It's-All-About-Her Dept:
Alaska should have a U.S. senator in place by the time Congress convenes in early January, even if all of the legal wrangling between the two rivals contesting the seat isn’t resolved by then, a federal judge said today.

Sen. Murkowski was aghast - aghast, I say - at the possibility of Alaska only having one Senator when the new Congress is sworn in on January 3. It's bad for the state, she insisted. We wouldn't have the representation to get our fair share. Why, some of that pork might be diverted elsewhere ... to others less richly deserving of it, apparently.

Sigh.

I think we've had more than our "fair share" (one of Sen. Murkowski's favorite phrases - it must be, since she keeps using it) and it's time we took some fiscal responsibility and tried doing things for ourselves.  Perhaps we could have, say, a few less square miles of federally-restricted "park" and pave a road or two. I'm just saying.

You're-Kidding-Right?-Right? Dept:

Alaska's Mark Begich is preparing to take a committee assignment that will make him the fifth-ranking Democrat in the U.S. Senate. Will that force him to become more partisan?

Is that even possible?

That's probably enough for now. Y'all have a great evening.

Alaska vs. "Stimulus" Funds

Much has been made of Governor Palin's request for only part of the porkulus. Let's see why:

The feds say Alaska could have more weatherization funds, if only we'll develop & adhere to a Uniform Building Code. Sorry, can't help you. What works in Juneau or Anchorage won't work north of the Arctic Circle (325 miles north of Anchorage). You can't dig footings in permafrost, just as an example. You can't lay water & sewer lines, for the same reason. Many villages have no running water, but bring in blocks of ice for their water supply. Porta-potties are the norm.

The feds say we could get more money for air quality funding, but we'd have to amend our statutes first. Nope.

They say we can get more money to expand the unemployment program - except that, in two years when the federal money dries up, Alaska would promptly go in the hole for the new, larger program. No thanks, again.

To quote Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell: "In all these cases, Washington is clearly trying to overtake Alaska with its agenda, and we are standing against that interference. In Alaska, our freedom is not for sale."
