Irregular Posting
Due to my upcoming vacation, posting will be light, at irregular intervals, and quite probably frivolous. Much like myself.

Batching It
So my wife and younger daughter made it to Hawaii last night, after a delay of several hours in getting the flight off the ground here. Not sure why, but stuff happens.
Anyway, they'll be waking in Honolulu this morning, which isn't surprising. After all, that's where they went to sleep last night.
And I, weary traveler, plod along here in Anchorage. Nah, that's too dramatic.
Let's just say I can't remember the last time I was alone in the house for more than a long afternoon. In this case, I won't see them again until the end of the month. Before they return home, Older Daughter and I will be winging southeastward to FOB Ozarks.
So all is good. I think. :)

Dreams of Upcoming Travel
A week ago, I called a tourism center in the town where we'll do most of our vacationing in a couple of months, and made reservations for dinner, shows, tours, etc. Elaborate plans.
The operator assured me that we'd receive an e-mail confirmation with all the details. (You see where this is going, don't you?) We'd have the confirmation within 24 to 48 hours, she said.
A week later, there's been no e-mail. No charges assessed against my card - but that's a good thing.
I called back this morning, and - surprise, surprise! - they have no record of my call. No reservations, nada. Zilch. Squat. And so forth, and so on, et cetera, et cetera.
So I called their local Chamber of Commerce and told them how unhappy I was. Then I called the first office's competitor.
Talked to a nice fella named Mike, made the same reservations, got the same total price. And by the time the call was ended, I had the confirmation e-mail, details, maps, and everything that was promised. And Mike threw in a 20 cent local gas discount, on top of all of that.
My outlook is a bit brighter now. :)
Now April just can't get here fast enough. It's been too long since my last vacation, and it's increasingly difficult to a) focus, b) be nice to those who are, let's say, less than astute, and c) care.

About the Lack of Posting
Sorry about the lack of posts, in the last couple of days. Too much to do, and not enough daylight in which to get 'er done.
We spent part of yesterday afternoon taking down the Christmas decorations; my wife was under the weather a week ago, and wanted to wait so she could oversee the packing away of ornaments and such. We didn't have much up, decoration-wise, as the daughters are grown and there are no little ones around. Most the tree, a wreath, and some candles, knick-knacks and a centerpiece on the table. Only took about 90 minutes to put everything away. That a far cry from a few years ago, when it seemed we changed out everything in the living room except major furniture pieces.
We're starting to organize for our spring vacations. Wife and younger daughter will make the regular pilgrimage to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. But a few days before they return, older daughter and I will travel to the Midwest. She's been wanting to return to some of her favorite destinations when she was younger, and didn't get to explore to her satisfaction, so off we go.

Friday Before Flying
Today is the last workday before a long-overdue vacation. Tomorrow is for packing, doing a bit o' laundry, and generally unclenching.
Sunday afternoon is for flying, and Sunday evening is for dining beachside.
In the meantime, I've reactivated the e-mail and Blogger apps on my phone, so as to check in from time to time. I'm not sure how often I'll check in, but at least I can.
In the meantime, work continues apace, and there's always something that needs my attention.

Our Next Vacation
Younger Daughter has just booked her first vacation alone, and is three-quarters jazzed about it. The other quarter is a bit of apprehension, but she'll be fine.
That inspired us to book a vacation for ourselves, a month sooner than we'd planned. But when one of your favorite places in the world has a 20%-off sale, AND the airfare is discounted for that same period, then ... well, you know.
Seriously, the airfare and hotel combined is less this time than just for the hotel in previous trips.
It's hard to say no to a deal like that, so we didn't. :)

Saturday & a Birthday
No, not mine.
Older Daughter is 25 today, and we're taking her out for dinner this evening. There are other gifts, of course, but still ...
She's also in training for "Shoot Boss" at Appleseed, and apparently it's a Big Deal. Very, very few female shoot bosses in that organization, and the national leadership is flying some folks up here to train her.
I can't begin to tell you how proud we are.

We're off to do our weekly shopping run to a few local stores. Oh - and also beginning to talk about vacation destinations for next May. It will be our 35th anniversary, and we have absolutely no idea where we want to go ... yet.
But it's early days, as they say, and the sky's the limit. :)

The Weekend
Ours was busy, but good.
On Saturday, we got up early, got the oil & differential fluids changed in the truck, did some grocery shopping, cleaned a little, and drove to Big Lake.
This gave me a chance to get the new-to-us Explorer into 4WD for a bit, as we followed an ATV trail for a bit. Had to make sure everything worked okay, ya know? :) After a round trip of roughly 150 miles, it's safe to say the truck meets our expectations, and we can take longer trips without worry.
Yesterday, we cleaned the rest of the house, grilled a bunch of turkey burgers (beer & brat mustard, some local seasonings, and BBQ sauce mixed in - yum!), went to the wife's summer company picnic, and then back home to watch a couple of movies.
Oh - what longer trips? We're thinking about taking the Alaska ferry from Whittier to Kodiak Island. It'll be nice to take the new truck along, so we can explore Kodiak in our own vehicle.

Gonna Be a Long 7 Months
until vacation. We were unable to take our annual pilgrimage to warmer climes this past winter, for various reasons. However, we just booked a nice, long getaway for early next winter. If the summers weren't so nice here, I don't think we could stand the wait.
It's also our first long vacation alone since becoming parents 24 years ago. Feels a bit strange at first, but it won't take long to make the transition.
See? We're over it already.

Time to Get Away
As winter moves in, and the forecast calls for falling temps and "significant" amounts of snow, it's time for vacation. It has been two years since we left Alaska for a fun reason, so we're going to a sunnier, warmer clime for a bit over a week.

A Spot of Vacation
We're off today. After stopping at Schlotsky's Deli for some lunch boxes making our own sandwiches with a rotisserie chicken, baguettes and a pesto/mayo mix, we're heading to Portage for a quick cruise to the glacier, and then taking a turn through the Wildlife Conservation Center (musk oxen, bears and moose - oh my!).

Saturday Afternoon - this & that
It's a quiet day, which is okay with me.
A few weeks ago, the "set/accel/coast" button fell off the steering wheel on my truck. I replaced all the cruise control buttons today, which involved removing the air bag assembly. It was surprisingly easy, and took all of 10 minutes to complete. Amazingly easy, which means some engineer at Ford got his or her butt chewed for it.
We've spent the last three hours or so looking at possible vacation destinations for a February get-away. So far, we're looking at San Diego, Phoenix, and/or Minneapolis (wife, two daughters, and the Mall of America; so don't ask).
It's 60 degrees and clouding up, just like AccuHunch guessed. They're calling for rain overnight, and temps in the 50s tomorrow.
