We have 10 degrees, and received about five inches of snow yesterday afternoon. Accu-Hunch, whose foreguesses were all over the map, first guessed we'd have 2" to 6". Then they changed it to 1" to 3", and we got 5" here on the south side of town.
Meanwhile, Accu-Hunch continues to insist that "some people got up to three inches in Anchorage." Whatever. In fairness, I suppose I should mention that the National Weather Service's official charter only charges them with recording the weather, rather than forecasting it.
It's a good thing, too, because they can't do it very well. Since nobody can predict the future with any certainty, it's not fair of us to ridicule the meteorologists for being wrong. Or is it? Perhaps if they didn't take themselves so-o-o seriously ...
Local news:
- A boy of 10, who received a heart transplant, has returned to Anchorage after being away for 2 1/2 years due to various complications. It makes a great Christmas for his family.
- The 16-foot-high "Snowzilla" snowman, a local feature (or eyesore - depends on who you ask) was finally ordered halted by the Muni. "Somebody" built it anyway, overnight, and the owner of that land claims he doesn't know who put it up. The city says they'll let it go until after the holiday, but then it must come down. The saga continues.
- The city also had to close its composting plant, which left the owners of some 5,000 horses here in Anchorage without any convenient place to dump the resulting manure. The city has directed the owners to send the manure to the local landfill, where the dumping fees are twice as high. The local news is reporting that many of the horse owners have started dumping manure illegally, although they didn't specify where. This situation stinks ...
So be of good cheer, folks: it's only the news. What's important is family, friends, and loved ones. What's important is spending time with them, and letting them know how much they mean to you.
For those who can't be with your loved ones, know also that you're still loved and appreciated. Your worth is not determined by whether you have family close by. If you're alone this holiday season, reach out - and know there are those who are reaching out to you.
Peace, my friends.

BAWAHAHAHAHAHA
By the way, if you use any of that stinking stuff for fertilizer keep in mind that it is HOT and a little bit will go a long way. And that ain't all...horse apples usually contain weed seeds picked up from the hay they get fed...best ay I know to get some lower forty eight grass burrs in an Alaska yard
I'm sure there are some here who need that advice, and I thank you for that.
You grew up in OK, and I grew up next door in Missouri. Some of our nearest neighbors had spots and said, "Moo." Fortunately, all us country boys speak fluent cow.
I remember driving across the state and seeing field after field of large dairy herds, but those days are gone. Today's kids don't even know what they've lost.
re Accu-Hunch
The Yankees just signed a guy for $108 Million for 8 years and he fails nearly 70% of the time. (Hit .303 last year.) So there's something to be said for a meteorologist making good dough for bad guesses.
Oops! That should have been $180 Milion.
Either way, seeing an entire profession making big bucks for poor performance does rather take away the incentive for trying hard. Years ago, the chief weatherman on the NBC station in St. Louis was pulling down about $80K a year, and talked about he had a 50% accuracy rate.
Since he was NEVER right, I finally figured it out. You know the part of the weather where they tell you the current conditions? That was it.
