Firearms on Campus: University of Alaska (Part 3)

Part 1 here; part 2 here.

I went to a meeting of the Anchorage 2nd Amendment Task Force last night. The speaker was the gentleman who plans to force the issue of a firearms prohibition on the campus of the University of Alaska. He has notified the Board of Regents, the Chancellor, and every State politician from the Governor on down, that he plans to be there on a specific date, openly carrying a handgun.

He did not ask anyone else to join him, nor even to simply be there to document what he was doing. Still, several people said they'd be there with signs and/or video cameras.

He also said that he and the Chancellor have spoken off the record; the Chancellor told him that the Board has decided to make it a non-event by simply ignoring him. If that's the case, the speaker said, then he wins by proving the "administrative rule" of the Board is unenforceable.

The speaker's entire case is that he believes that rule to be unconstitutional, as the state college campuses are not on the statutory list of places where bearing a firearm is prohibited. Therefore, it's not illegal to do so, he asserts, and the Board's wishes to the contrary are irrelevant. They can prohibit bringing a weapon into any building by simply posting such a notice on the entrances, but not on open spaces.

IANAL, but it sounds like the guy's on the right track. However, I'm guessing there will be more information in the coming days, on the pre-arranged date the speaker chose.

You are always so current on what's happening. I've missed like 3 weeks of news thus far and can't seem to catch up. Just found out about the volcano and airline mess a week after it happened. In my own little world I guess.

We can carry on my campus and I'm glad we can. I don't believe a shooting has happened here b/c some gun crazed, right wing, nutcase was allowed to carry a weapon on campus. Just my two cents.
