Some Local News

Wednesday was a good day - 29 degrees in the morning, but little frost so no resultant scraping thereof - and the sun was shining for most of it. The trees have mostly turned golden this year, which is interesting.

5:50pm Wednesday
The forecast for the rest of the work week looks like a repeating loop: highs in the upper 40s, lows just below freezing. Our friends at AccuHunch Weather still guess we'll get that rain/snow mix on Saturday night into Sunday, but that's okay. It's been too warm for any snow to stick, even if we get some.

The local news is filled mostly with stories of local interest: the police chief was involved in a fender-bender, and has been, ahem, reprimanded for inattentive driving. Most seem to think he should be cited for careless driving and pay a small fine, just to put the hint of favoritism to bed. I agree; it would look better to John Q. Citizen, as the APD hasn't won itself many friends, the last few years.

Thousands of dollars raised at a benefit for wounded soldiers has disappeared, and the organizer is the chief culprit. As a veteran, I say that - if he's found guilty - they should toss his sorry carcass over the fence into Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and let the airmen and soldiers ... well, let nature take its course, 'nuff said?

And this one, I like:
Alaska Rep. Don Young suggested Tuesday he plans to introduce a bill to repeal every regulation that's been put into effect in the last 20 years, an idea that could have huge implications for everything from aviation safety to oil drilling if it actually happened.

"My bill is very simple, I just null and void any regulations passed in the last 20 years," Young told the Anchorage Downtown Rotary Club. "I picked 20 years ago because it crossed party lines and also we were prosperous at that time. And no new regulations until they can justify them."

Read more at the link. I think he's on the right track, but it doesn't go back far enough. (I would have picked the Wilson administration ... but that's just the libertarian in me.)

And finally, from the Unalaska police blotter:

Holy cow, it was over 100 here in Austin. It's almost October, for Pete's sake.

If we could average the weather here and there, it would be nice ...
