Moms are important, and most of us are here because of at least one.

God's Word for Mother's Day, 5/12/19

For all you moms and grandmas out there, Happy Mother's Day!

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Proverbs 31:10, 27-28 KJV

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long.
Her children respect and bless her; her husband joins in with words of praise: “Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!” Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Festoon her life with praises!
Proverbs 31:10, 27-28 MSG

Mother's Day Dinner

Barbequed pork tenderloin (Sweet Baby Ray's sauce, of course), quinoa with Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce, and steamed veggies with just a touch of soy sauce, Italian seasoning, olive oil, and salt & pepper.

I'm stuffed.

Happy Mother's Day

To all the mothers and grandmothers out there ... those who have slaved and sacrificed and given of themselves, over and over ... those who have gone without so that their children wouldn't have to ... those who love and nurture and train and teach and so much more ...

Away Down South

Travel to Missouri went very well, yesterday, with all flights either on-time or ahead of schedule. There wasn't even much traffic on the interstate this morning.

I'm at my mom's in southwest Missouri, where it's sunny, very windy and 85 degrees. The weatherman is calling for t-storms tomorrow, and temps in the 90-degrees range. That's hard for an Alaskan to take - Friday was our warmest day of the year, so far, with a high of 57. 90 is pushing it, comfort-wise.

Mom's church is hosting the party ... yes, I said party ... for my dad on Tuesday. As Christians, we do not mourn the way some might: death is an escape from our temporary physical existence, and the Bible teaches that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. My dad is in Heaven, seeing the face of God, and the last thing he'd want is for anyone to sit around weeping and wailing because he's made it there. So we're going to celebrate!

Mom, my sister and I have been looking through photographs today, trying to find a fair assortment of milestones from his life which the church will turn into a slideshow for Tuesday. My sister is pulling together some memorabilia for a small display at the fellowship hall: his books of poetry, Army insignia, his American Legion cap ... things like that. The Legion is going to do a very brief but proper military send-off for him, and then we'll all sit down to a big luncheon in his honor.

Mom's holding up pretty well, and I'm here for her. I'm taking her out for nice lunch tomorrow, and then we'll just visit for a few days.

Did I mention it's too hot, here? Oh, right ... just making sure. Anyway, I spent some time talking to my bride (it will be 31 years, this month) and wishing we could be together for Mother's Day. Sometimes, life interrupts your plans with things which are more important. Happens to us all, all the time.

It's how we deal with those interruptions that defines us. Y'all be kind to each other, hear?

Happy Mother's Day!

My thanks and gratitude to all the mothers out there - overworked, self-sacrificing, and often under-appreciated - but not forgotten. I pray you all get the desires of your hearts, today.

I have little to report. It's 48, sunny with clear skies (again - hooray for us), and the girls have gone shopping. I'm doing the laundry, and will be taking my sweetheart out to dinner tonight.

Have a great day, folks; thanks for stopping by.

Mother's Day

Good morning!

Many, many bloggers are writing heartfelt messages about - or to - their mothers, or mothers in general. Many, many of those bloggers are far more eloquent than I.

Let me just say, then, "Mom: thank you for everything. I love you," and "Happy Mother's Day" to my wife and all those who read these few words.

* * * * *

It's partly sunny with a high overcast this morning, and 46 degrees this morning. Leaves have finally developed to the point that the trees are green. Having just come through eight months of barren tree and winter weather, we're hoping for a long summer season, too. It's not likely, but still we hope.

My daughters took me to see two movies yesterday: Star Trek and Wolverine. I've been a fan of Star Trek since 1966, when I stumbled across the original series by accident, and began watching it on our old black-and-white TV. This movie captured the essence of the characters very well, without the actors having to imitate the original cast. It's the first movie I've attended in nearly 30 years where the audience actually cheered at the end.

Two of the movie characters - Spock and McCoy - do physically resemble the original actors. But it turns out not to be an important aspect of the story; it's just a nice coincidence. There is a single thread in the story line that is jarring, and not in keeping with the original series; it bothered me, but I chose to overlook it because, in the end, it doesn't really matter.

It starts out strong, and finishes stronger. If you like Star Trek at all, then you'll absolutely love this film.

The Wolverine film is exactly what you'd expect from the fourth movie in the X-Men franchise, with a coherent and cohesive storyline. The character is well-developed by now. Several other well-known mutants are introduced and featured. A good and enjoyable movie, but not a great movie.

I've given my lovely wife a bouquet of roses, and my youngest fixed breakfast. Now the wife is off to a local spa for some well-deserved pampering. I'm going to see into what kind of mischief I can get.
