Union Thugs in Michigan Destroy Hot Dog Vendor's Cart

This was sent to me by a friend: here's a guy selling hot dogs at the demonstration, making some money - just as he has for the last 16 years. How did these peace-loving, "aggrieved" union workers respond to him?

“Everyone that had a ticket I had given a hot dog to,” the 63-year-old owner of Clint’s Hot Dog Cart and Casual Catering told FoxNews.com. “So when two guys, one with a mask, came to get their hot dogs, I didn’t think anything of it because they had tickets and I was just there for a job.”

He described the action that ensued as “violent.” Only minutes after he’d handed the two men their hot dogs, the pair tore down the tent, turned over his serving tables, smashed his hot dogs, tossed a cooler filled with sodas and spilled his chili.

“I kept explaining that I was just here to do a job, that I wasn’t on anybody’s side, but when people started calling me racial slurs, my friend who works at the Capitol told me I had to get out of there, so I crawled out,” said Tarver, who is black.

His response? He prayed, with his wife. But that's not the end of the story, either:

Until Tuesday, he thought he was relatively unknown. But word spread about the incident, and local residents on both sides of the issue began rallying to help Tarver out.

Lorilea Zabadal, a staff member for Republican state Rep. Al Pscholka, set up an online fundraiser at gofundme.com/SupportClint. The goal was to reach $5,000. As of Wednesday afternoon, over $14,000 in donations had been raised.

“I supported Clint. He’s a great guy and a great small business,” Lt. Governor Brian Calley said on Twitter. He also thanked citizens who had supported Tarver financially.

Tarver said that state Sen. Joe Humes and his wife reached out to Tarver on Tuesday night promising to reimburse him for his equipment.

And a spokesperson for Americans for Prosperity said they plan to reimburse Tarver as well.

Don't Let the Lights Go Out

The prosecution of seismologists in Italy for not "adequately" predicting an earthquake (which, of course, is impossible) has prompted some to warn of a new Dark Ages descending. But they're not the only ones.

In this country, so far, it's more a case of "your opinion isn't politically correct, so therefore you're stupid" than "you're wrong because of the evidence". For example: despite rock-solid evidence that there has been NO global warming for 16 years, the alarmists continue to decry both mankind and its use of fossil fuels as the cause of the ongoing crisis. You know, the one that doesn't exist.

Don't be afraid to call a spade a spade, and keep right on pointing to the evidence ... whether or not it fits their agenda.

Ethics Investigator Rules Against Gov. Palin

In a copyright story in today's Anchorage Daily News, "An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by trading on her position in seeking money for legal fees, in the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this week."

The investigator points out that the public would be unlikely to contribute funds to Gov. Palin if she weren't a public figure.

I'd like to point out that if she weren't a public figure, there wouldn't have been 19 ethics complaints filed against her. Or is that too logical?

The article goes on to say, "The investigator, Thomas Daniel, sided with Palin in her frustration with having to defend herself against a barrage of ethics complaints. He suggested that Alaska lawmakers may need to create a law that reimburses public officials for legal expenses to defend complaints that end up being unfounded.

John Coale, a Washington lawyer who helped set up the fund, called the probable cause finding "crazy," adding that if upheld, it would mean that no governor could ever defend themselves against frivolous ethics complaints.

"If this complaint is true, there's no way to defend yourself" as governor, Coale said. "Anybody can keep filing ethics complaints and drive someone out of office even if you're a nut."

Coale said that unlike other states, Alaska's governor has no legal counsel's office to defend the governor from allegations brought against the governor in her official capacity."

I'd also like to point out that the investigator's recommendation isn't an official "finding," and whoever leaked it to the Associated Press may have violated the law.

To quote a friend, "The intent is to harm Sarah's reputation, not to expose unethical behavior, otherwise why was the report released?"

Wednesday Afternoon

It's a postcard-perfect day today - sunny, 65 degrees, mostly blue skies with some thin cirrus clouds and a jet contrail or two. There are some happy little clouds floating along the peaks of the Chugach Mountains (I hear Bob Ross echoing, there), and it's just gorgeous.

Here's a little local news, which several of you have mentioned that you like:

• More smoke gets in your eyes: a large Interior Alaska wildfire sparked by lightning more than three weeks ago continues to increase in size, but firefighters say they are making progress. The Railbelt Complex fire 12 miles from Nenana is actually three separate fires, and at 161,344 acres it was the largest fire in the state on Wednesday.
• Too much is never enough: another ethics complaint has been filed against Gov. Palin, by a person who had previously filed four other complaints. This is the third complaint filed since Sarah Palin announced that she will resign from office on July 26.
• Life is stranger than fiction: something big and strange is floating through the Chukchi Sea between Wainwright and Barrow. It's thick and dark and "gooey" and is drifting for miles in the cold Arctic waters, according to Gordon Brower with the North Slope Borough's Planning and Community Services Department (and nearly 12 miles long, according to the article).
  
• Flying is still hazardous: two men (one from California, the other from Oklahoma) were killed yesterday when their small plane crashed near Wasilla.

We're still talking about how much fun we had on the wildlife cruise, and now thinking about taking another, longer one. There's a ferry which goes from the Kenai Peninsula to Juneau & other port cities in the panhandle ... hmmm. Sounds like fun!

Alaska News, Bits & Pieces

Smoke gets in your eyes: The air quality in southcentral Alaska is going downhill. The Chugach Range faded to a milky gray, masked by smoke. Didn't look good, and it's hard to convince your lungs the air is good when it's hot, hazy and still. We could use some rain, or even a stiff wind.

A high-pressure system is making our air stagnant. And it's causing smoke from fires west of Fairbanks to build up here.

Aww, the poor puppies! An illness in Juneau dogs has been diagnosed as canine influenza. "This appears to be pretty mild," said Gastineau Human Society executive director Chava Lee, "but still we wanted people to know and to take precautions to protect their animals." No dog deaths have been reported.

Word on the street is that several so-called reporters from PMSNBC are up here again, sniffing around. I'm sure that they think they may stumble over something new regarding Sarah. The degree of PDS (Palin Derangement Syndrome) seems to be at levels approaching that of last August when John McCain first named the Governor as his running mate.

You almost feel sorry for them as they run in circles, tripping over each other. Almost.

More smoke, more eyes: One of the wildfires producing all this smoke is located 13 miles northwest of Nenana, and now covers more than 126,000 acres.

Downdraft blues: An airplane crashed Monday about 25 miles northeast of Palmer, sending two men to the hospital with nonfatal injuries, according to federal aviation officials. I hope the pilot and passenger weren't hurt too badly.

The Bellanca 8GCBC apparently got caught in a downdraft while flying in a valley and the gust slammed it to the ground, causing significant damage to the plane ... It doesn't seem to have done the occupants much good, either.

Good morning!

The day has dawned bright & reasonably clear. It was light enough to see outside when I got up at 5:00, and won't get dark until nearly 11 pm. Have I mentioned I love this time of year?

We've already had more sunny days in April than we had all last summer, combined. The couple of rainy days have knocked most of the dust out of the air, and it's just purty. We'll be seeing some fresh greenery on the trees, any week now.

It seems that summer is coming early, this year, and that's OKAY with me, since we had none last year. It was the 3rd coolest "summer" on record, and just about the coldest July ever - average high was 53.5 degrees.

It's supposed to be 54 today, so that makes April warmer than last July. That's a good thing!

There's not much news to report, up here, other than the ongoing diatribe against Sarah Palin. The left-wing loonies (yeah, we've got some up here, too) continue to rant against everything she says or does.

"Her legal defense fund is illegal." "Her answer to a direct question last fall may have broken the election laws." (Read "She scares the snot out of us, so let's see if we can bankrupt her and make her unable to run for any office, ever again.")

If it's tourist season, how come we can't shoot 'em?

DHS is effectively criminalizing perhaps as many as 70% of us. You don't agree with the President's politics? You're a right-wing extremist, and possibly a domestic terrorist.

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says.

Opposition to abortion makes you a criminal? Then I'm guilty.

Belief in the Constitution makes you a criminal? Guilty.

Returning veterans are a threat to national security? How does it make our armed forces feel, to know their government thinks they are terrorists-in-the-making?

This is not a joke. Read it and be prepared for whatever's next.

This story says the arctic ice is melting so fast, it'll be gone in 30 years.

Is this the same sea ice that has been growing so fast that it's been trapping ice-breakers and other ships which go up there to check on the "melting", or searching for a "northwest passage"?

The same arctic ice where researchers admitted this year that they missed & under-reported an area of ice nearly the size of Alaska (500,000 sq. miles)?

What a bunch of buffoons!

And now I'm waiting for the inevitable penalty, tax, or whatever sacrifice that Americans will be asked to pay, because "something must be done!" (And naturally, it will be all our fault.)

Domestic Terrorists? (Snark)

Apparently, my flag supplier could be linked to (gasp) domestic terrorists. They offer at least one flag which the MIAC report identified as being popular with militia groups.

As you know, the report identified the historic Gadsden ("Don't Tread On Me") flag, among others, as icons that it identified with domestic terrorism and militia groups.

I purchased a U.S. flag from this company, but had no idea I was doing business with such a {scary music} dangerous outfit {/scary music}.

Good. Grief. Thank goodness the Missouri Governor had the decency to denounce the idiotic report.

Friday Afternoon Updates

• Mt. Redoubt gave itself a shake today, and apparently decided to keep on shaking. Well, perhaps quivering is a better description.
• There are no steam plumes or smoke from the summit, which I suppose is a good sign. The experts continue to insist that an eruption is likely.

• In other news: Ashley Judd, the well-known wildlife and subsistence-existence expert, intends to continue attacking Sarah Palin on Larry King Live tonight. Apparently Ms. Judd can't find work, and so will mouth the left-wing-loony platitudes with no real concept of the significance of living off the land. But danged if that will keep her from saying it!
• This on-going attempt to smear the Governor is becoming a farce, just like the Cabinet nominations in D.C. I guess the political apple doesn't fall far from the tree, eh?

• The Legislature, after having announced it didn't want to re-visit the whole over-blown so-called "Trooper-gate" issue, voted today to find Todd Palin (the "First Dude") and nine of Governor Palin's aides in contempt. They didn't answer the Senate's subpoenas last fall, when they were issued.
• But the oh-so-magnanimous Senators agreed that fines would be inappropriate, since all those folks did answer, after the Attorney General's bid to stop the subpoenas was rebuffed by the courts.

• It's a lovely 23 degrees, and has been sunny all day. It's too bad we had to be inside. However, tomorrow (partly cloudy & upper teens) doesn't sound too bad, either. We'll see what we can find to do.

Thursday Bits & Pieces

Good morning! It's about 10 degrees, which is normal, and there's some light snow in the forecast.

• AccuHunch is guessing we'll get 2" to 7" by tonight, with snow showers again tomorrow. Most of us here want the white stuff ... and even though 7" isn't a lot by our standards, it serves to insulate the ground & prevent frost from getting deep enough to damage water or sewer pipes. Besides, it covers up all the dirty snow & makes things look purty again!

• Mt. Redoubt isn't doing much of anything, and I'm beginning to think it won't. There hasn't even been a steam plume for the last 2 or 3 days, so ... perhaps nothing, this time. Despite the inner child's cry for a couple of days off, we'd really rather not deal with the clean-up engendered by the ash-fall, possible disruption of the power grid, and various bits of machinery (like automobile engines & HVAC systems) that might result.

• The State Legislature continues to debate how to cut the budget, with a $1.6 Billion shortfall this year.

• The Defenders of Wildlife, a Washington D.C.-based outfit, wants to dictate conditions to Alaska. Now they've released a film, narrated by Ashley Judd (a renowned big-game and wildlife expert? Nawww...) accusing Governor Palin of all sorts of things, like refusing to end the predator control program. Gov. Palin is rightly firing back at those who have no business butting into Alaska's wolf-versus-moose programs. It never occurs to the do-gooders that the reason for keeping the moose and caribou herds healthy is because so many people, especially Natives, still live off the land, here. I think the part that disturbs me the most, however, is that the D. of W. have an Anchorage office, and should know better. Even PETA was able to figure it out.

There's not much else to report, right now. I'll check in if anything new develops, and keep you posted.
